Funny story. Was looking through some .mpg video files from many moons ago. They worked on Winamp right off the bat. They worked on Windows Media Player after it downloaded the mpeg-2 video extension. But they didn't work on the latest VLC.
Goes to show you that it's always good to have multiple players.
