streaming servers/services

I have been trying to do some research about streaming a broadcast. Alot of the services I have checked out seem to say something to the effect that Shoutcast is a good tool to use to stream your broadcast.

My question is, why should I pay these streaming services plus use Shoutcast for something that I can pretty much do for next to nothing with Shoutcast alone?

I'm sure I'm not the only one here that is working on a limited budget, but I'm tired of the CRAP and headaches of trying to set this Shoutcast up only to not have it work. If there is a simpler way to do this (I'm willing to pay someone) please let me know.

One last thing, if there are low cost alternatives to streaming one's broadcast, why is no one even close to Live365's prices? Are they really good at a really good price or just crap altogether?

Live365 is shit, because you have to sign up to listen.

You pay streamhosts because they can get you more slots at a higher quality than you can on your home line.

For instance, I can get 5 listeners at 24k with my home line.

By paying for a streamhost, I can get 150 56k, and 100 24k, and even more, but thats all i need right now.

yeah, i'm back.

You'll soon learn to realize that hosting your own shoutcast server and sourcing it on a home network is nothing but a headache. I assure you.

Whip out the wallet if your serious about broadcasting.

Yes, also stream hosts have easily remembered URL's and online resources such as our Wavepanel

So what type of connectivity do you have running in your house?

sorry djamp but we settled the thing in pm's so you missed the point a little.
and the unlimited thing has nothing to do with cable or dsl

I maintain my own stream servers but they are not at my house. Three computers here hook to two seperate DSL lines, four hops to Dallas to my servers and I push out over multiple gigabit lines. Little bandwidth is needed here but I like the redundancy of multiple lines and want to add cable as well (just in case). I let the datacenter in Dallas worry about maintaining the massive bandwidth portion.

But since I went to maintaining my own stream servers I've never been happier - never have issues like server going offline or buffering - and save a very nice chunk of change. If you can afford it that is always the way to go.
