Winamp library 'gone grey' for the nth time

I love winamp, the interface is easy and it doesn't hog a lot of memory.

Only problem, it deletes my whole library (Yeah, I know main.dat and main.idx) on an infrequent basis, it's very unpredictable.

Question, why can't this be fixed? As far as I know this problem stems all the way from 2004 and it still happens. Instead of me having to find dodgy ways to backup my main.dat and main.idx, how about a foolproof fix innately, instead of a plug-in of sorts?

if it's not known what causes the issue then how can it be fixed?

yes it is frustrating but of the number of people using Winamp, only a small handful have experienced the issue as far as can be determined (not an excuse i know but just proves the randomness of the issue).
