P2P Radio

I was browsing SourceForge and came across this excellent Java application called P2P-Radio.

Although I have since learned about PeerCast and Streamer, this open-source project is the first time I’ve seen an implementation of streaming through P2P, and it actually works in tandem with ShoutCast.

What an awesome concept! Anyone able to host their own audio or video (P2P-Radio supports NSV, although I have not tested it yet) station with unlimited listeners/viewers with just a copy of Winamp and this Java application.

But then, you need a copy of P2P-Radio to listen to the stream, which is a bit of an inhibition if the technology is to get off the ground.

So I thought (and I’m sure you all saw this coming ), what if the technology was integrated into Winamp, perhaps through a plugin? It could integrate with the Media Library so that P2P stations can get listed in a similar way to Internet Radio and TV.

What do you think?

i hope either one of winamp's dev people or even one of our plug-in people will look into and consider implementing this.

it almost works like bittorrent, except with streaming radio. brilliant!

i'd actually be excited to see someone try enabling built-in file-sharing (legal files only of course!) with winamp, in the same manner. maybe having it's own pane/view section integrated on the media library, where users could search the collections of other people currently connected with the system.

of course, considering Nullsoft's problems with WASTE and gnutella, they'd probably have their hands tied trying to produce something like that. it'd be a large undertaking for a programmer, or a team of them even, but it'd be the knock-out punch for Winamp against any other media players.

hrmm.

Seems like a good idea. But what about copyright issues? What about fee's for internet radio stations that now exist? How would you know how many users were connected (which is required to pay fees)?

And inthegray, come on. Some things should be left seperate Talk about bloat.

Although it would be possible to integrate something like this into WinAmp, the amount of programming & debugging to get P2P streaming to the reliability/stability level of the WinAmp main release would be most cumbersome.

However, if there were such a plugin developed by non-Nullsoft programmers, and it were stable enough, I'd be all for having it included in the Full install. (Peercast has a WinAmp plugin, but the network & the plugin are buggy, unoptimized freaks of nature.)

true, maybe it would be a bit much. i spout off a lot of impossible ideas.

it'd be an awesome plug-in though!

if i had the time available, i'd learn how to program, just to do it.
