Any news on winamp 6

Where can I get links, or is this a dead horse.

In the past a year and a half after a major release of a new version you would think you would get something.

There are no plans for winamp 6, there will be plenty of incremental 5.0x releases, 5.093 coming to a screen near you soon.

There have also been plenty of releases since 5.0 went live, 9 full releases, plus a number of b versions as well.

As this appears to have little to do with skinning I'm moving this to winamp discussion.

What would/should a Winamp6 have that Winamp5 cannot do (or be be designed to do) ? Of course, I've only been on the forums a short time, but looking at the long "Winamp Wishlist", I don't find it likely that they'd start on a Winamp6 when there are still alot of functions to implement.

http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....threadid=64975

I could see if the Winamp team found/created an even better engine for winamp, one that would be incompatible with (or completly different than) the existing Winamp would they likely consider going to a different version.

Unless you just want winamp to have a version number of 6

From what I've seen going from Winamp 3->5 was a significant jump/improvement. While I can't remember WA3 compared to WA5, it was supposedly very slow. That there obviously requires the development of a new version of Winamp, one that runs smoother.

After all, we're at 5.092 right now.

sbroadbent, refer here for more information on Winamp 3->5. In fact they are very different, but not really a significant jump as it was just a continuation of Winamp 2.9x.

Anyway, "After all, we'rew at 5.092 right now.", we could have an infinite number of versions (subversions, etc) and never get to 6. How would you like that?

wishlist != todo list.

what's in the wishlist is just that and if they're implemented then that's a bonus but considering a lot of things are done by 3rd party plugins i don't think it's that much of an issue, especially considering some of these 'core things' would be done as extra plugins anyway.

also what on earth is with wanting a full version increment all the time? just silly i think (cos i want a 5.555 )

And to supplement my earlier post, it's my understanding that some applications have a version format A.B.C where A represents a major release, B represents a minor release and C represents a more minor release still. So in theory, this chain could continue forever, ie if Winamp were to truly adopt this system, we could see versions like 5.0.9.1.3.5, and on and on. So it's quite possible to never reach v6 under such a system.

It was a monkey who flung feces on you if you listened to crappy music. Search for gen_simian.dll There might be a copy floating around out there.

Note: gen_simian is not real

I suppose so. After all, there is atleast one function in there that has been on there since winamp has existed.

On the otherhand, based on impressions I got from that thread, it wasn't a far stretch to assume the wishlist was a list of things the winamp team would be working on. Particularly if they are frequently asked for functions.

If you want to, check out the version history at Winamp Heaven in the old versions section.
