What great little programs do you use?

Soemtimes it takes me a long time to figure out great software like Opera and or Ad-Aware, so just out of curiousity:

What nifty, valuable little programs do you use?

Myself:
Opera
Winamp: Enhancer plugin, Profiler plugin, skin deleter plugin, (and I recently discovered logarithmic volume)
PageDefrag: Defrags computer at boot up so no files are "red"
SpyBot: Scans for spyware and other annoying files.
ID3-Tagit: Great freeware tagger.
Reg Cleaner: Cleans out starup programs, unistall information, and a lot of other things, user friendly and freeware.

And of course, CDex, Nero, and Trillian.

Yourself?

They say if you play a Microsoft CD backwards you hear satanic messages. That's nothing, if you play it forwards it installs Windows.

freeware plays music. duh. good for organisation, looks and streaming audio.
foobar2000
freeware also plays music. better for in background of games, and for sound quality customisation (if you're anal enough to fiddle with it).
opera
shareware (kinda) browses the net. well.
nero
retail burns CDs
cdex
freeware rips CDs. not as accurate as EAC, but faster.
mirc
shareware accesses IRC chat servers.
msconfig for windows 2000
freeware was missing from win2k, but present in most other windows versions. this redresses that. lets you mess with startup options and other such fun stuff.
expertool for gainward gfx cards
freeware (bundled with gfx card) lets me clock my GF4Ti4200 to a Ti4400
windvd 4
retail (bundled with gfx card ) plays DVDs. can speed up or slow them down without distorting the audio, and is as such a party favourite

google them for links, i'm too lazy. you may not find the msconfig one, ask me and i can email it or something.

freeware - duh.

Avant Browser
freeware - tabbed MDI window interface for IE.

Poweroff
freeware - standalone program for shuting down, going into standby etc. GUI and or command line driven. Put it in a specific folder (can't remember what) and all you have to type in the command line is poweroff -[switch, if desired]

A program I made in autoit dubbed maintence
ask if you want it - Runs norton antivirus in a 'hands off' mode, runs scandisk, defrags the computer, then shuts it down. Shuts down via poweroff but it doesn't have to. Useful for doing maintence in your sleep.

Net transport
freeware - download program that IMO pwns.

AMS fast defrag 2.0 standard
freeware - memory defrager. downloaded it last week because my comp keep running out of memory. sometimes crashes WA3, but it stops my entire comp from crashing till I can sort it out.

Mouse Wrap
freeware - wraps the mouse ie, move it off one side of the screen and it appears on the other, kinda like in some pac-man games.

WordWeb
freeware - dictionary.

Blah, thats all I can be bothered with. Heaps more.

IrfanView (surely you've all got this, but no-one's mentioned it)
Freeware image viewer/editor/converter, thumbnail generator, slideshow, screensaver maker, also plays most audio and video formats, and more...
ooh wheeee

Spybot Search & Destroy (everything Ad-Aware wishes it could be, hehe)

Hammerhead Rhythm Station (freeware, for making drum loops)

Rebirth, Reason, Making Waves, Cubase VST, and other Sequencers

Most of the others have already been mentioned (Cdex, WinMX, ZoneAlarm, mIRC, Nero, Foobar, and of course Winamp 2.91 and Winamp3 dev builds)

Also: LeechFTP . . . and tons more, lol.

Oh yeah, I didn't mention the link, or the fact that it's properly free, and has an excellent interface, far better than that of Zonealarm. That's why it's > you.

Also WinRAR. Sure, it costs $29, but it's so, so, sooooo good. It does EVERYTHING you could possibly want to do with an archive - it'll even make Zip archives if you feel you need to, as well as the usual Rar. Rar's good because you can split large archives easily, create solid archives (makes archives that contain lots of files smaller) and so on. So much better than WinZip.

Ooo cool stuff here

AVG: Best discovery so far. I can't afford Norton or McAffee, but this is perfect. If you don't have a virus scanner check this one out, it's free and easy to use.

ZoneAlarm: What does this do exactly? Does it put up a firewall? (what does a firewall exactly do heh?)

IrfanView: if I only want to view picture is Opera good enough? What do you use it for mostly?

Rainlender: Ok but if I want a calendar I double click the clock in the system tray.

WinRAR: Great archiving tool, however I don't use archiving too much.

DVD Ripping

I rip all of my own DVD's into two-CD (700MB) OGG-encoded OGM files using the following utilities. They're all you need to make awesome DVD rips.

Gordian Knot rip tools - invaluable suite for ripping DVD's
OGMCutter - Cuts OGM files to specified size.
ChapterXtractor - Extracts chapter info for use with OGGMux.
OGGMachine - A BeSweet front-end for OGG. Creates OGG audio from AC3 files.
OGGMux - Brings video, audio, subtitles and chapter info together into an OGM file.
SubRip - Rips subtitles from ripped DVD files, saves as a text file (.SRT) which you then embed into an OGM file.
BSPlayer - The best player for DiVX or OGM files, supports subtitles.
(Codecs you need for OGM viewing: OGGDS0995.EXE, SubTitDS1400.EXE, latest DiVX 5.xx codec bundle)

Other utilities...

ACDSee - for browsing, basic editing and screen captures
Serv-U - invaluable FTP server software
IPWatch - a system tray program I wrote to watch for IP address change, so I know when to change my web page links pointing to my FTP server.
GetRight - I use the GetRight browser the most, which allows me to pick links to files out of HTML code, including links to videos not readily available.
File Sifter - a program I wrote which sorts a folder of files into alphabetical folders.
File Renamer - a program I wrote which gives a before/after list of files and allows you to use search/replace/rename functions to designate new filenames. Then simply execute the rename and it does all files that differ between the before/after lists.
SizeDoesMonitor - a program I wrote to monitor a folder or path's file size and alert me when it nears or surpasses the designated size.
GoldWave - For editing audio.
WinAmp 2.91 - (of course).

I gave it a shot, and I have to say it IS better than trillian. LOTS of plugins and customizable functionality. It's only drawback is no skinning, however there's so much you can change with it you'll hardly notice that. Recommended.

This is a great program, I've been trying to use it but it's VERY expensive for a lousy Calendar program, and the trial is 30 days. If you know something I don't... *cough*... fill me in

Well as noone else has mentioned it I'll say xemacs. It might be OS I can't remember, free though. It's a text editor extrodinare, a web browser, a mailer, it integrates well with utilities like make and diff, can merge files etc. Pretty much anything you could ever wish for as a coding editor. It's not small though, it's pretty damn huge but great with it.

Sygate Personall Firewall - 'Shareware', a lovely little firewall that imho is better than ZA.

Evidence Eliminator - Shareware (I think), a great program for securly deleting all your unwanted data. With multi pass overwriting of all your browsers cache, temp files etc, people will never know your a kiddie fiddler.

Bullet Proof FTP - Shareware, an FTP server, small fast and does it's job well.

Popup killer - a popup killer for IE. You have to program it to recognise the title text in the popup and that's it gone forever. Very easy to use and add popups to it's list. It's tiny fast and resource low.

Hyperspoof - Free. A program to spoof a website into thinking you've come to it from another site - very handy .

"We think science is interesting and if you disagree, you can fuck off."
