Dear Steve..
I decided to try using winamp to decode mp3's into wav files. However, when I try to play them back, I get a lot of crackling and popping. What am I doing wrong? |

Is the popping in the mp3 file to begin with? The diskwriter plugin doesn't usually create noises in the wave files.
Try CDex, a cd ripper program but also an mp3 -> wav, wav -> mp3 converter. It's here - http://www.cdex.n3.net |

If these pops and crackles are indeed caused by the WAV writing process, and not present in the original song files, then you should download the latest proper drivers for your soundcard, and the latest version of DirectX.
