When the volume slider on the main Winamp panel is adjusted in the top half of its range (50-100%) the sound volume only changes a small amount but in the bottom half of its range it is too sensitive and harder to set accurately.

This i think is because is uses a linear law (100%=0dB, 50%=-6dB, 25%=-12dB, etc). As our hearing is logarithmic the slider law should be made closer to a log. law also, so for example, over most of its range, every 10% change in slider position makes the volume change by (say) 5dB. Real (hardware) volume controls work this way and so does the software volume slider that comes with the Creative Labs Live cards, and is more natural and much better in my opinion.
