too bad that that thing isn't exactly well made in terms of UI and what not, and to the poster above, i'd really recommend setting your expectations as low as you possibly can, no big company is interested in a hardware player (only really small companies/individuals are)

Since it's provided as-is and DIY, I don't think there is much risk that people will have too high expectations.

It too me a while, but I finally jumped ship to my phone, when the batteries of my Creative Jukeboxes started dying.

For sure, I'll still be using the Musicolet offline(!) audio player (which I can't recommend often nor highly enough) on my Android device; I love that as much as wAmp. Since I found that, I have no need for a dedicated hardware player.

That said, I do agree that it's really "neat!" from a novelty / experiment / gimmick kind of stance. And respect to the programming!

Yeah. Also, almost no one has a hardware player due to smartphone's playback capability. Winamp For Android was something like that.

Hmm. Sadly, I got a smartphone, only after it vanished from Play Store. I found out about that still existing (as an APK file, outside the Play Store), only after falling in love with Musicolet. It's on my list to try "WinAmpDroid", just out of curiosity; but it's old, wasn't finished, and I guess it'll not have the powerfull functionality that I'm used to.

I am not affiliated with Musicolet in the least, but I love it so much that I want to spread the word to all music lovers here, who want to use a stand-alone music player on their phone. It has multiple queues, and many other functions, but works very smoothly and intuitively.

i do agree that it's neat but when i'm presented with "winamp clone on a touchscreen" then i somewhat expect it to, at the very least, get some of the UI buttons in the main window to work, but this solution unfortunately just takes a acreenshot from the skins museum and not the actual skin files themselves, maybe i just have very high expectations

Well, yeah, I've learnt long ago to reality-check my expectations before I get realy excited about something. On the inside. But that doesn't deter me to at least let some enthusiasm (about something that's potentially nice) show on the outside. It makes me a bit happier person, to not give my skepticism too much credit. (Still, it's there if I need it -- meaning, it;ll help me not to be too disappointed. In, say, a new wAmp. )

Now that I mention it... I've seen you really want to help manage other people's expectations, too, regarding that last bit. (That's quite the eufemism, obviously.) Why are you so dead-set against anyone having positive anticipation for the new wAmp? (It's an honest question. I'm curious why you have such a vehemently negative outlook. I mean, you've written enough about what it is that you're not confident about; but did something bad happen, somehow, that fuelled this?)

perhaps i should lower my expectations on things, that's probably true, though something claiming to be winamp like... meh, can't help myself.

it's more that i want to warn people rather than managing their own expectations, whether or not they believe my words that i'm backing up with sources is up to them, and what sparked it? a bit of reading on what i have to say would help

i'm more so surprised i havent been banned or similar with how i've been against the new winamp here, but only time will tell

If that's the case, then suddenly, I might understand you much better. I'd compare it to what happened with Trek (a little bit) and with Star Wars (much, much more). I still love both franchises, overall; I'm a solid Wars fan and a huge Trek fan.

And some of the new material... mainly films... I hate. Vehemently. I found my digital self -- who's usually a very laid-back persona -- really spouting hate(!), and voicing my disgust(!) about the writers' and producers' choices. Because they took something that I hold very dear (and something from which I glean my entertainment and relaxation -- or thus, I feel, it should be; so I own it! It's my preciousss!) and they lazily re-hashed it with complete disregard for what was great about it and what it stood for.

The new Trek, I could eventually forgive and even grow to like.

The 3rd Wars trilogy, I Cannot. Ever. Forgive.
I hate it and I'm deeply angry, about how they could even produce such lazy crap and -- in a very tangible way -- patronize and insult old fans. And by doing so, make tons of money.

So... I told that whole story, to see if that might be -- partly, sort of -- what's happening with wAmp for you?
As said, in that case, I suddenly understand more of you, and I even sympathise. (And, if you're proven to be right about some of the things you point out, I'll surely come to agree with you.)

i'm not exactly going to stop any time soon when anyone's going to bring up new winamp and how excited they may be, i'm trying to follow radionomy's/audiovalley's every step as close as i can from what's known publicly and put out a warning, as much as my words may seem to be ignored

well, not loved, just seen winamp as a buddy of sorts (growing up with it during my childhood may explain that)

yes, to me it's like as if an old pal was messaging me again and then suddenly goes off about some MLM scheme, which may just be the case with winamp here (someone, and you know who you are, doesn't care and just wants to see the new winamp launch, if you're into being scammed then that's on you)

i can forgive the reboot movie trilogy as it picked up after the first movie, and it still kept in touch with trek in various ways of referencing different things (archer's beagle, the xindi war e.g.), but after that trek has fallen considerably unfortunately (ironically i need some time to get myself invested in star trek as a whole, not the new stuff but the old stuff), star wars wasn't so lucky and i'm really skeptical of everything else after the garbage sequels

it's just a shame seeing every company turn to NFTs/crypto in some manner and seeing the giant titan of media players fall to such schemes as well, winamp may have lost some reputation over the years with AOL under it's wing but this may be more damaging and end catastrophically for it, but if people dont know (and especially the terms mentioned) then they will blindly follow them anyway and wonder later why it's not the same, the new corporate redesign and massive slow down of the new homepage should've been enough of a hint for people to go "hey, something's not right here", but searching twitter for the mere mention of "winamp", it seems like they're not thinking twice about that

anywho, those are my 2 cents and hopefully my rambling has answered your questions

now about the idea of a hardware player, it'd be neat if it also came with a user port for extensions (or plug-ins, hehe) and didn't run on some sort of raspbian thing or whatever, but rather being it's own self contained system just like with an ordinary mp3 player

why do you think that is that preferable over an underlying OS? You reckon it's more stable, or less consumptive of power and resources? (Are those latter 2 even problems for a modern jukebox?)

If I can see my album art prominently featured in the pkayer and the lock screen (if any), I already approve of the design.

well, assuming of course that the design of the player isn't just your ordinary phone screen but rather something that has buttons you can touch and interact with, imo it'd make sense for it to just have some type of firmware or basic OS that does just what's needed, with non-standard expansions (i.e. one or two user ports ala commodore 64), it could fit the bill if done right
