Closing Winamp leaves winamp process running, no taskbar control

Hi,

I've recently started using Winamp (just downloaded and installed last week) and have been getting regular problems. After trying various Shoutcast radio stations I will be unable to hear any music on all but a very few of the stations. When I then close Winamp down, I cannot access my taskbar. Clicking on it or any of the minimised appplications does nothing. Pressing the Windows key does not bring up the start menu. Looking in Windows Task Manager shows me that winamp.exe is still running as a process. Sometimes Winampa.exe is there as well. Killing th eprocess lets me get back control of my taskbar.

I have uninstalled/reinstalled as per the instructions here on the forum.

Here are my PC details:

-PC or Motherboard make/model - Dell Optiplex GX240
-CPU & RAM - 1.6GHz 128MB RAM
-Sound card or chip - SoundMAX Digital Audio
-Videocard - 16MB ATI Rage Ultra
-Windows OS (including Service Pack, eg. WinXP sp2) - Windows 200 Pro SP4
-DirectX version (start > run > dxdiag) - DirectX 7.0 (4.07.00.0700)
-Winamp version (eg. 5.24) - 5.24
-Confirmation of the Winamp installation type (Pro, Full, Bundle, Lite) - Bundle
-Whether you chose 'separate' or 'shared' user settings on the multi-user page
-of the installer options - Shared

Here's my HijackThis log:

Try updating DirectX first (latest version = 9.0c)
Winamp requires v8.x or higher for DirectSound Output to work properly.

How are you exiting Winamp? Do you maybe have it minimized to the tray, and then right click the tray icon and select 'Exit'? If so, then that was a known 5.24 bug.

The only other known issue with 5.24 that can cause a freezeup on Winamp exit was related to the Portable Media Player support plugins (ml_pmp.dll, pmp_*.dll). Did you install all of those? (you didn't include a my_plugin_list.txt log, heh).

Note, both of those particular issues are fixed in the latest 5.25 public beta.

Thanks, I'll update the DirectX as you suggest.

I've been exiting by either choosing File | Exit or clicking on the [x] to close the application.

I have not installed any plug ins (unless they were automatically installed by the WinAmp installation routine).

How do I get a list of the plug ins in use?

FWIW, the problem still occurs after updating DirectX

By installing and then using the 'One for Nunz' plugin.

This is an excerpt quoted directly from this section of the Troubleshooter FAQ sticky thread...
In many cases, also providing a list of all plugins installed can help us to diagnose many problems. You can use DrO's One for Nunz plugin (gen_nunzio.dll) to produce a list of all (1st & 3rd party) plugins installed. Install the plugin, open winamp, go to: Prefs > Plugins > General Purpose > One For Nunz > config, and click "Generate text file of all plugins installed". Then attach the my_plugin_list.txt file (location: Winamp root dir) in the zip along with your HijackThis and dxdiag logs (if required).
Note: for diagnostic purposes, we may ask for a my_plugin_list.txt log even if you haven't allegedly installed any 3rd-party plugins. This is so we can also confirm that you are using all of the latest versions of the default 1st-party plugins (ie. using old versions of the native plugins can cause conflicts).
*Note: there is more to read there that could help in diagnosing the problem, so I'd suggest doing so.

I have no signature.

I'm having the same problem.
The only difference is that I just played some songs and then closed winamp, but then the process is still lingering in the task list. I'm having the same problem on my workstation and notebook.

System specs:
• AMD 2.21GHz x64
• 2 GB RAM
• 300GB HDD
• XP PRO SP2 (5.1, Build 2600)
• Radeon X300/X550 Dual output
• DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)

I had the problem happen again this morning. I'm just listening to a shoutcast radio stream and the sound dies. I try to start the stream going again, the equaliser graphic in the WinAmp window flashes as if there is some sound, then stops moving (sometimes it just flattens out, other times it sticks showing some bars). Trying to play other streams results in the same behaviour. Closing Winamp leaves me unable to select anything from the taskbar. As soon as I close the winamp.exe, that shows up in the task manager process list, everything is back to normal. I can then restart winamp and listen happily until the next time it happens.
