Metallica Releases New Single

Metallica delivers its new single, called "The Day That Never Comes," on Thursday (August 21st) to radio stations nationwide. The song is taken from the band's upcoming album, Death Magnetic, and clocks in at a hefty seven minutes and 56 seconds. Drummer Lars Ulrich told us that the rest of the tunes on the CD don't get much shorter than that: "This is not three, four minute little ditties. These are, pretty much all of them are, quote, 'epics.' Most of them are seven, eight minutes, I think there's one at six, you know, but it's that type of stuff. When I think of those (Metallica) records from the '80s, I think of the songs being journeys that take you to all these different places and different musical landscapes and all that type of stuff, and this is kind of what these songs do."

Death Magnetic arrives in stores worldwide on September 12th in a variety of digital and physical configurations, ranging from a straight download to a deluxe "coffin box" edition.

Metallica will play two shows in Europe to celebrate the CD's release, both of them with low ticket prices. The group will perform in Berlin on the 12th to open the new O2 arena there, with tickets going for $14. Next the quartet will head to London for a September 15th show at that city's O2 arena, with tickets costing around $9. Both shows are open to fan club members only. Proceeds from both gigs will go to local charities.

The band will kick off its first indoor North American tour on October 21st in Glendale, Arizona, with shows booked through the end of January.

It's okay, cyanide sounds better. I'm not a big metallica fan though.

My mate has ordered the coffin box, which is like £70.
To quote him "u get a dvd,t shirt, flag, poster, demo cd, and the album in a white coffin box"

STOP DOWNLOADING OR I WILL BECOME QUITE ANGRY!

And on the note of the new song I still think it's OK. It's hella better than anything on St. Anger and you can definately tell Bob Rock is gone - all good. I also heard Cynaide but it was a really crappy live copy so it was hard to tell with that one.

Overall it's an improvement and it sounds like a move in the right direction but the verdict will have to remain out until I hear the rest when the full CD is released...on the internet...for free...

P.S. Is it just me or does Lars' head look MUCH larger than the rest of his body?

He's leaning toward the camera. It's perspective.

From some goggle result:
1. CD with demos of the 10 songs from the album
2. DVD of unseen “Making Of” footage from the recording sessions. This will consist of 30–60 minutes of segments highlighting the recording process
3 Death Magnetic T-Shirt (this will not be magnetic and design could change slightly)
4. Death Magnetic Flag
5. Death Magnetic Pick Card
6. Fold-out coffin-shaped card with band members photos
7. The Death Magnetic Album, on CD digi pack with special dye cut
8. all presented in the beautiful white coffin box

So, is that hair-rimmed coffin on the front of the album supposed to look like what I think it looks like?

Cyanide is worse than anyhing I've heard of St. Anger (which fortunately isn't much though).

I haven't heard the studio version left. The only one I've come across was a live bootleg which sounded like complete crap.

No, not really.

That just reminded me, someone on the electrical.com forum, in a thread called Metallica in the Crap/Not Crap subforum tried to edit the album into something worthwhile (kinda like those Phantom Menace edits).
(downloading right now, but you of course should only do it if you don't care about eternal damnation)

I got the new album in today. After several years of bashing them - this album is pretty damn good. Got a real good hard sound again and it reminds me of something between kill em all and the black album.

I can't believe I just said that.

And I can't believe I read this:

Drummer Lars Ulrich acknowledges that file-sharing is "part of how it is these days."

Metallica has seemingly come a long way since back in 2000 when it led the charge against illegal file-sharing.

It was their case against Napster that really made Metallica the face of file-sharing critics and really incensed a lot of their fans who couldn't understand how a band that had already made millions was concerned with making millions more. It became the poster boy for greedy artists everywhere and caused many to turn their backs on the band that had turned it's on them.

Things at Metallica Inc. then changed a few months ago when Ulrich said in an interview with Rolling Stone that "We've been observing Radiohead and Trent Reznor and in twenty-seven years or however long it takes for the next record, we'll be looking forward to everything in terms of possibilities with the Internet."

Since both of these artists allowed fans to download a recent album for free the comments were understood to mean that it had a change of heart and was starting to look favorably upon file-sharing.

Fast forward to yesterday, when Lars gave an interview with San Francisco-based radio station Live 105 to promote Metallica's upcoming "Death Magnetic" album, and again we hear him having a new found laid back attitude when it comes to P2P and file-sharing.

"Listen, we're ten days from release," Ulrich said.

"I mean, from here, we're golden," he added. "If this thing leaks all over the world today or tomorrow, happy days. Happy days. Trust me. Ten days out and it hasn't quote-unquote fallen off the truck yet? Everybody's happy. It's 2008 and it's part of how it is these days, so it's fine. We're happy."

Well, "Happy Days" are already here because it leaked to BitTorrent several days ago. The leak reportedly occurred after it was accidentally sold in a French record store, the buyer then wasted no time in sharing his treasure.

HELL HATH OFFICIALLY FROZEN OVER

That Hench Recut didn't do a lot for me. It reminds me too much of the condensed versions of songs that get played on the radio. The songs I like best on this album are the ones that sound like Metallica's been listening to Diamond Head again, and Diamond Head had very long songs.

Not sure if they're listening to Diamond Head but they did get rid of Bob Rock who never really knew anything about rock. Forgot who they signed but if he got them back to this point in one album maybe by the next they will be Metallica again (alabeit OLD FUCKS).
