Depressed Mood, er I mean Depeche Mode - Violator

Their not-so-positive outlook was a downer for me

What happened to "A"? (Sorry, don't have an "E" )

It's in its room and refuses to come out.

(Maybe Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2, it certainly is downbeat)

You could list most of the Warp catalogue, it was recorded in operating theatres. It's a shame, as soon as Rob Mitchell died they signed bands like !!! (decent, but not exactly akin to Squarepusher)?

Ellen Allien - Stadtkind (2001)

Warmer than Aphex Twin but chilling in many a place.

I'm half way through collecting the Warp albums (90 out of 180), when it's done I'll have enough 'coldness' to start my own penguin farm.

Isn't that right, Pingu.

Cold maybe, downbeat in part too, but sad/miserable/sullen?

That's because there's already another name for depressive downbeat emo-techno: trip hop.

Pink Floyd - Momentary Lapse of Reason

lyrics to the last track: Sorrow

The sweet smell of a great sorrow lies over the land
Plumes of smoke rise and merge into the leaden sky:
A man lies and dreams of green fields and rivers,
But awakes to a morning with no reason for waking

He's haunted by the memory of a lost paradise
In his youth or a dream, he can't be precise
He's chained forever to a world that's departed
It's not enough, it's not enough

His blood has frozen & curdled with fright
His knees have trembled & given way in the night
His hand has weakened at the moment of truth
His step has faltered

One world, one soul
Time pass, the river rolls

It's not enough it's not enough
His hand has faltered
.... .... ......

And he talks to the river of lost love and dedication
And silent replies that swirl invitation
Flow dark and troubled to an oily sea
A grim intimation of what is to be

There's an unceasing wind that blows through this night
And there's dust in my eyes, that blinds my sight
And silence that speaks so much louder that words,
Of promises broken

Smith himself that this album (and particularly the title song) could be music to kill yourself to.
If you don't take it literally, it's a splendid album.

Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska. Title cut is about Charles Raymond Starkweather, 19 y.o. mass murderer who, in 1958, killed 11 people from Nebraska to Wyoming.....then of course, he deals with unemployment, families torn apart.....

Whole album is depressing....one of his greatest, IMHO, tho...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Joy Division yet.

Unknown Pleasures (1979)

Closer (1980)
