Terri Schiavo dies amid legal, ethical battle

Terri Schiavo dies amid legal, ethical battle
PINELLAS PARK, Florida (CNN) -- Terri Schiavo, the brain-damaged woman at the center of a family battle fought on a national stage, died Thursday morning, nearly two weeks after doctors removed her life-sustaining feeding tube.

George Felos, the attorney for Michael Schiavo, Terri's husband, spoke to reporters hours later. "My condolences to the entire Schiavo and Schindler family and all those in the country and around the world who are grieving at Terri's loss," he said.

"I haven't made a statement for a number of days....I can just tell you that Mr. Schiavo's overriding concern here was to provide for Terri a peaceful death with dignity, and I emphasize it because this death was not for the siblings, and not for the spouse and not for the parents. This was for Terri."

Randall Terry, founder of Operation Rescue and the Christian Defense Coalition, will lead a memorial service for Schiavo on Thursday evening at 7:30 at the Praise Cathedral Renewal Center in Pinellas Park.

But soon after receiving word of Schiavo's death, demonstrators -- some of whom had been outside the hospice for weeks -- grieved openly with gasps, sobs, songs and prayers. (Full story)

Moments before the announcement that she had died, Schiavo's parents, Mary and Bob Schindler, hurriedly entered the Pinellas Park, Florida, hospice housing their 41-year-old daughter.

The couple had begged to be with their firstborn while she drew her last breath, but police denied their request, said Brother Paul O'Donnell, a spokesman and spiritual adviser for the Schindlers.

Michael Schiavo, Terri's guardian, controlled who could visit her and when. (Spouse as next of kin)

John Centonze, the brother of Michael Schiavo's live-in companion Jodi Centonze, said Michael Schiavo was with Terri Schiavo when she died.

John Centzone said that Michael Schiavo "truly loved" Terri Schiavo. Of Michael Schiavo, and his fiance, John Centonze said, "Everybody is crying.... She got the call from Mike. And he told her. She just broke down crying."

Police motorcycles escorted a white van carrying Terri Schiavo's body to the Pinellas-Pasco County Medical Examiner's office in Largo, Florida, for an autopsy.

A written statement from forensic investigator William Pellan said the cause of death and the autopsy report may not be available for several weeks.

As approved by a judge March 7, Michael Schiavo will have his wife's body cremated and interred in a family plot in Pennsylvania, the state of the couple's births and marriage.

National reaction
President Bush offered his condolences. "Today millions of Americans are saddened by the death of Terri Schiavo. ... I urge all those who honor Terri Schiavo to continue to work to build a culture of life where all Americans are welcomed and valued and protected." (Congressional leaders react)

Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, who had intervened in the case to authorize continuing nourishment for Terri Schiavo in 2003, issued a written statement.

"Many across our state and around the world are deeply grieved by the way Terri died. I feel that grief very sharply as well," his statement said.

"I remain convinced, however, that Terri's death is a window through which we can see the many issues left unresolved in our families and in our society."

Inside the Florida Statehouse, legislators observed a moment of silence at the news of Terri Schiavo's death.

Final moments
David Gibbs, a lawyer representing the Schindlers, said his clients were "with Terri up until 10 minutes before she died.

The Rev. Frank Pavone was with the Schindlers during their final visit. He said, "...We not only grieve that Terri has passed, but we grieve that our nation has allowed such an atrocity as this, and we pray that it will never happen again." (More reaction)

From the Vatican, Cardinal Renato Martino, prefect for the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, said Terri Schiavo's death was "nothing else but murder."

Hours before Schiavo's death, Florida's Pinellas County Probate Court released nine of 11 videotapes of the brain-damaged woman from 2002. (Full story)

Her relatives and friends never agreed on what Terri Schiavo's wishes would have been, but they all said the once-bashful woman would have shunned the spotlight her disability and death created. (Terri Schiavo's obituary)

Before Schiavo's death, her best friend in high school, Diane Meyer, told The Miami Herald that Schiavo would have asked, " 'All this for me?' ...She just wanted to be your common, everyday, happy woman."

Legal wrangling
Wednesday, the Schindlers lost what their lawyer described as their "last meaningful legal appeal" in their desperate battle to have their brain-damaged daughter's feeding tube reinserted.

Pasco-Pinellas Circuit Judge George Greer in Clearwater, Florida, ordered the feeding tube removed March 18 at Michael Schiavo's request. He has said that his wife wouldn't have wanted to live in her condition -- what Florida courts have deemed a "persistent vegetative state."

The parents believed otherwise and had sought to take guardianship of their daughter from her husband. Their bitter court battles began in 1998. (Schiavo case timeline)

The Schindlers, Gibbs said, "can know they have done everything possible under the law in letting government

"Well, got to love you and leave you, need to go get into the shower and rub my hard naked body all over with soapy bubbles, I'll be back later to carry on playing....

It'll take you some time to get over the image of me naked in the shower......mind you don't masturbate to hard thinking about it...."

It is sad, I hope she is happy with god now.

This whole situation has brought up debate in my own family. We have discussed together what we would want in the same situation.

Seems to me that the USA is still far from proper legislation about ending a life in a human way.

makes me glad that I live in the Netherlands were this issue is taken care of by law.

Afraid that this isn't the end of the battle , Terri's parents are going to fight this one out.

Each Thursday a new show on Celtica Radio with Darkwave music.

Nope, it's not a radiostation just a non stop darkwave music stream

I find it sad as hell that we can let someone suffer and starve to death, but not give them a shot that will kill them rather painlessly.

...Although I do think that she has the right to die. Everyone has that right, and a random family member should'nt (in my book) be able to take that away.

Remember xzxzzx's list of rights a while back? I think that was one of them

The parents, unlike the husband, were grabbing every penny they could gain from their daughter's misfortune. It was sickening. How much did they get for selling their "tragic story" to the papers, again?

I don't:

This system works.
I personally think it's not good that congress can approve of legislation that allows it to send a case to another court when it disagrees with the judge's ruling. I would call that a major flaw in the system.

What I believe the BBC article is saying how the "system works", is our system of checks and balances. Congress and the President can sign whatever legislation they want into law, but, the Supreme Court as the judiciary branch of our government, does have the power to strike it down. This really is a striking example of the "checks and balances" system.

Did you see the picture of Terri Schiavo's sister in the article cited at the the beginning of this thread? I'll say it again: what it is about the case that will send me to get a living will and/or a health care proxy isn't the pictures of Terri, looking brain-dmaged and helpless. It is the faces of everyone who loved her, on both sides of the controversy, looking unimaginably exhausted. I don't want to put the people I love through this kind of ordeal.
