Developing R128 support

I'm seriously considering adding R128 support with my own plugin to Winamp. I already have an idea about how to deploy R128 calculation, UI integration, and most everything else like ReplayGain but I'm wondering if there's a way to modify the audio samples during playback without creating a seperate DSP or output plugin to apply R128 gain. How does the current ReplayGain implementation do it? Is it all core-internal or is there some API I'm not seeing?

I'm nearly done with my current hardware project and will be wanting to start a new project soon and this is what's been on my mind for a while.
