Winamp freezes when playing a file with the wrong extension

(I had a proper writeup here than the forums auto logged me out when I hit "submit new thread"...)

Winamp Install is default 5.58 full, no added extensions.

OS: Win7 x64
Mobo: Asus M4A78-EM
Audio: HDAudio, whatever asus shoved on the MoBo.

Issue: Winamp freezes if a .mp3 file renamed to end with .wav is loaded and then played.

  1. 1. Rename a .mp3 file to .wav
  2. Load the file into Winamp
  3. Click "play"

How Found: Some game decided to store all of its .mp3 encoded background music as files ending in .wav

Related Issue: If a .wav file is renamed to .mp3 Winamp will load the file and just refuse to play it, Winamp will not crash. If the file info dialog is opened Winamp will allow the editing of metadata which is then added to the file as if the file was a proper MP3 file.
