I'll add a few more...

Masha Qrella
http://www.discogs.com/artist/Masha+Qrella
http://www.headquarter-entertainment...ands_masha.php

Julia Guther
http://www.discogs.com/artist/Guther

Margaret Fiedler (Laika)

Ayako Akashiba (mainly for her work with Guitar)
http://www.discogs.com/artist/Ayako+Akashiba

And from the old skool...

Joni Mitchell's probably already been mentioned, but she's worth mentioning again.
If you've not heard much (or anything) by her, start with "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" (1977) & "Hejira" (1976)

Grace Slick, mainly for her work with Jefferson Airplane (1967-72)

Edie Brickell, if not just for 'Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars' alone...

and Julianne Regan (All About Eve), if not just for "Scarlett and Other Stories"

Other blasts from the/my past:

Judie Tzuke
Suzanne Vega

Christine Newby, aka: Cosey Fanni Tutti (Throbbing Gristle, Chris & Cosey)

Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance, solo)

and no-one's even mentioned Siouxsie Sioux :-)

or Sinead O'Connor (solo, Jah Wobble, Afro Celt Sound System, Massive Attack)

Talking of Sinead O'Connor, which links me to other guest vocalists for Massive Attack from over the years, including:

Elizabeth Frazer (Cocteau Twins, TMC) <-- and possibly the best voice of all time :-)
Tracey Thorn (EBTG)
Nicolette
Shara Nelson (not into her cheesy solo work, but the stuff with Massive Attack is legendary)

and Kristin Hersh probably also deserves a mention (ex Throwing Muses).
Her latest album "Learn To Sing Like A Star" is literally back on song, and pretty good.

mmmm, Collide & Curve (from page 1 of this thread)

Hmm, and all the rest are lead singers of bands, not solo artists, so I guess I won't bother mentioning them then...

*cough* Jane Tilley (Perfume Tree) *cough*

*cough* Louise Rhodes (Lamb) *cough*

[edit]

Ahh, yeah, ujay mentions Joni Mitchell on page 1, heh.

Grace Potter...She plays the Hammond B3, Fender Rhodes, and electric and acoustic guitars (says Wikipedia). She's quite the impressive lady.

...because 50 cent is well known for being female.

Meh, the only 'solo' female act I have is Avril Lavigne, although I do listen to quite a lot of female fronted groups which isn't the purpose of this thread so I'll spare ye.

Yes, I love it almost as much as Nightwish. Sharon den Adel has a fantastic voice.

But, for my favorite female artist: Tarja Turunen
Ex-lead singer of Nightwish, she now has a solo career. I would consider her to be one of the best singers I have heard in "real" music. Her singing is more in the style of opera, which isn't very common.
Phantom of the opera (live)
She is my sin
