Library Size
I seem to have run up against an upper limit for library size. I started with clean install with version 5.581. Winamp crashes if I try to add just any extra mp3 file. It doesn't matter what other software is running or indeed no other software. I have tried stopping all unnecessary processes. I have approx 280k files in the library at the moment. Am I expecting too much?

Library Size
Thanks for your interest.
I usually add media to the library by dragging in folders. I have tried all sorts of methods though, including xml import of file created by iTunes. All will crash winamp. Library size currently is 280321. The libary size was 322188 when it would no longer add media. I decided to clear everything out and start again with a clean install. This time I got as far as 280321 mp3's. Pete |

i would try clearing the ML, and then adding watched folders.
i would also turn off all the "guessing" metadata crap. it does 43k for me, np. i doubt there is a "hard limit" but rather this is a case where such large transactions fail. Once again thanks for your interest and responding.
I am reluctant to start over with the ML because it takes so long and I don't believe it will make any difference. I have noticed that if I remove 500 tracks, say, from the library then it still will not add anything without crashing! So something happens to the library when it is large. Also it will crash after playing between 5 & 10 tracks. Metadata guessing is turned off by the way. I must admit that I have never used watched folders because I tend to create the folders and then leave them alone. This means they only need to be scanned once. There is no need to "watch" them. I read somewhere in earlier posts that having some folders in the "Watched Folder" list can itself make the sytem unstable. Maybe that was a problem that has now been corrected though. |

usually the main cause for a crash when adding additional files comes from Winamp not reading the tag correctly though normally if an offending file can be found then the issue has normally been fixed in the offending input plug-in for that file format.
there are different ways to work out the offending file(s) - the watch folders thing seems to be one of the common methods to try to work it out. unfortunately however it's done it's a pain to work through to find the issue. seeing a copy of your plug-ins list -> http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....161361#plugins could be helpful if only to rule out something external messing with things. -daz |

i agree with DrO, who is much more knowledgeable than I. you could use www.mp3tag.de to make sure you don't have extra or broken tags. if you have id3v2 tags, delete any id3v1 tags for instance. also, as a workaround, you could install to different locations separate instances of winamp, and have each one monitor different areas of your library, (pop and classical for example) if that roughly halves it. Ok so here goes with the plug-in list.
Most of my mp3 files have v2 tags only. I have removed v1 tags from them. I had thought of separating the library the way you suggested and it might indeed come to that. Pete |

plug-in list looks fine so i'd have to swing to it being an issue with one of the file tags especially if it's id3v2 that you're mainly using.

Of course I can't completely dismiss the possibility of a faulty ID3 tag. There is still the problem of crashing when I try to add any one single file, (I have the choice of thousands that are not in the library yet), it crashes on every one that I have tried. As I said it also crashes if I try to add a very small XML file created by iTunes.

this thread reminded me of these old issues, maybe the people having the crashes could try 5.7 and see if they can generate a crash report?

adding media to library from synology nas
i've tried adding media to library from synology music folder but the process keeps getting aborted, even after i've re-installed winamp 5.8 already. however, it works if i add each subfolder/album individually. but this can take forever since i have more than 160GB (26,000+ files) stored already. is there a better way of adding the "music" folder? thanks to anyone who can help. i got "audio station" but i prefer winamp.

Assuming you are connecting to the drive by LAN (because Wifi would just be loads of issues) you might want to check your synology or router logs to see if there's something causing a dropout

Instead of loading all ur music files at the same time, try creating m3u lists in batches. It works.
