wmv question

Again, my new computer is making me reinstall things I forgot how I got installed and working on old box.

Anyway, just tried to click a wmv file and nothing, notepad tried to open file so downloaded it and it opens locally and plays in WMP. 'Openwith' winamp and made default player (don't see wmv in list of file types and don't know why?)
Now nothing happens. Searched here and from some posts decided to try installing ffdshow - still nothing.

Now it comes to my question. I checked out my in_dshow, it is v1.04 and lists as filetypes MPG;MPEG;M2V;AVI

I added wmv to end and now the wmv videos work. Since I already installed ffdshow I'm wondering about it all. Did I need to install ffdshow and why was wmv not checked on my winamp installation. And why is wmv not listed in file types preferences.

Just curious since it is working now.

still not working

I said it was because the first one I tried did but not the second. murphy's law.

The one that doesn't work says

video size 320X240
audio 22khz 16bps 1ch
284kpps
using
wmaudio decode dmo

The one that does says
vid: 464x260
44khz 16bps 1ch audio
406kbps
same filters.

WMV is supported by in_wm and not by in_dshow by default, however as you have seen WMVs can be decoded by DirectShow if you set it that way.

In what way is the second video not working? Winamp seems to have got the same decoders loaded so it should work. Are you certain the the two files do get the same decoders?

I have to admit I do not use the latest in_wm because I have to record streams (all non-drm of course).
both clips run:
ffdshow video decoder
wmaudio decoder DMO

The bad clip just sits there at 00:00. the information box gives the same decoders and says fps 0.15 but the screen is blank.

However I have new information. The bad clip will play if it is queued behind the good clip and the good clip plays out and continues on to the bad clip enqueue.

Neither clip can handle ffwd or moving to a position in the clip. The good one just doesn't jump and the bad clip will freeze out winamp.

I tried the latest in_wm.dll and this problem still exists.

Any suggestions. Thanks

Well I'm stumped. What is the source of the two videos? Could one of them be a protected file? If this was the case I would have expected that using in_wm would solve the problem, providing that you have a license to play the file.

The only other thing that I can suggest is that you look at the video FAQ (below) and tell us what Media Info reports about them.

Thanks for the pointer, I missed that in the FAQ for sure.

I'll be back with a report if this doesn't enlighten me.

I still can't understand the non-play in winamp and yet playing in wmp. Here's the 2 files the good one and the bad one. They are encoded different. What should I check now. Thanks.
