OK. I've got winamp up and running and I have added a bunch of url's to my playlist and I have saved it.

Is there any way I can edit they descriptions of the stations to give them a better description so that I can remember my favorites from the large list that I have?

Here's what you can do: bookmark each URL. Then, hit Ctrl + Alt +I and edit the descriptions of the bookmarks.

Bookmarking allows you to quickly access the oft-played items. You can bookmark a single track or a playlist. To do so, In Windows Explorer, right-click the item you wish to Bookamrk and in the context menu, choose "Add to Winamp's bookmark list". Then, to access this item from the menu, just choose Bookmark and then the item of your choice.
If you want you can edit your bookmarks and organize them as you like (hit Ctrl + P, and highlight Bookmarks).

More on bookmarks

Do you lose bookmarks when you upgrade to a new version or do they stay around?

In theory, no.
But if you want to be sure not to lose them, back up the file called "Winamp.bm" in the Winamp directory.
