Purpose of category tag?

This may seem like a dumb question (actually, I'm pretty certain it is), but what's the use for the category tag? I'm going through my library and manually fixing files that were improperly tagged for whatever reason, and I'd rather only do it once, and fill out as much info as I can. Is it really just and arbitrary thing for users to fill out, like the comments part? Or is there actually some sort of intended use for it? I tried searching the forum, google, Wikipedia, and the ID3 and Winamp wikis, but they haven't given me a decent answer. Thanks.

According to the standard, I think there is no such tag:

Category field = editable via 'Edit Selected Item(s) (Ctrl+E)' in the local media views right-click menu.
Category is a custom field that can be used for virtually anything,
eg. Night/Day, Party/Alone, Rock (for all types of Rock), etc.
It's just another database only field.

Actually I think it's not database only, and I think this should be fixed. I copied and renamed files I had changed the category on and rescanned my library - those files still had the category.. it's an actual tag. I don't like that.

Request: A little SmartView Query Language love.

Searchable in the ML by using a query such as:
?category="whatever"
?category has "whatever"
(replace "whatever" with actual search string)

How to edit the category field with winamp? I can't find that field in the tag editor. The only way is using the explorer of Windows and edit it in the properties of the file or using a tag program (i don't wanna use them, just winamp).

Don't have category field. Only the typical fields, album artist, label, and composer. I'm using version 5.551

Hmmm... at a guess, the ml_local.lng file in the es-us lang pack hasn't been updated to show the Category field.
It's definitely there in the default en-us lang.

I've attached the fixed ml_local.lng from Manuel.

Unzip ml_local.lng from the zip
Open %ProgramFiles%\Winamp\Lang\Winamp-es-us.wlz in your Zip program, eg. 7Zip
Replace ml_local.lng
(eg. just drag+drop the new .lng file in, and click OK to the replace prompt).
Attached Files
File Type: zip ml_local_spanish.zip (17.9 KB, 177 views)
