No sound on WMV files

Hi, I am having a problem with playing WMV files. I was using Windows Media 6.4 but I couldn't get the sound to work on WMV movies so I decided to try Winamp to see if it would correct the problem but it doesn't help. Do I need the proper codec? I tried downloading the Winmedia codec package for 6.4, but that was no help either. I just re-installed Windows 2000. previously I had been using Winmedia 9, and it had worked fine on that.

well i believe that some wmv use difft codecs. if youre going to stick with 6.4, instead of upgrading to 9, i do beleive you can download 9 codecs for 6.4

the last download on the page:
microsoft

and it also depends if the video files actually had sound in the first place, or how well they were ripped/recorded.

According to fungoid, the CODECS were already installed.

@ fungoid

Is there a reason you are sticking with 6.4? Maybe you could try reinstalling WiMP9.

Otherwise, as billyvnilly mentioned, it just might be the WMV files.

I have played these WMV movies fine on WinMedia 9 before, but I didn't want to re-install WinMedia 9 because I have heard it causes problems.

by winmedia codec pack, are you referring to the WiMP9 codecs for 6.4? otherwise, try the last download on the link i provided.

Ive heard bad things about 10. From my experience, 9 wasnt that bad, as long as you turn all features OFF.
