Problems with newly installed Winamp

Greetings. I installed Winamp yesterday, twice. Note that this is the FIRST time I've tried out Winamp, so I do not have any older versions. This is a new desktop (Windows-based, IBM compatible), with the latest Java, etc.

1) It did not work, so I cleaned it completely off my C drive and reinstalled.

2) This time it worked - the first time. After a few hours, when I came back, it wouldn't work. I got a message saying "Bad DirectSound Driver." There was more to the message, but I couldn't copy it down fast enough, because...

3) Now, when I click on the button on my toolbar, the Winamp screen appears for only a split second, but with a grey overcast - the same sort of grey overcast that you see when the computer has too many tasks awaiting it and needs time to get through them all. Everything else works.

4) What is strange is that now I have no sound at all - with other programs as well, and including with the internet.

Thank you.

A friend gave me this website, which helped me solve the problem. I only hope now that it doesn't come back - i.e., when I close Winamp and open it again, it isn't back! But, for now, I'm all set, though I'll appreciate any advice you have to keep this problem from recurring.
