Rip slow, WAV encoding

I cannot get faster than 1X ripping speed.

I'm using the free version, 5.5 (X86) 10 Oct 2007.
I'm ripping to WAV (WAV Encoder v1.01).
I've tried setting ripping speed to 2x, 4x, and 8x.

Machine is Intel Celeron 2.1G, 1.5G memory. CD is Liteon, claimed max speed about 50X.
Winamp uses 1% - 7% CPU, with occasional bursts above 15%.

Did I miss something?
