simple stupid question
I need to make a poster out of a paused DVD screen shot.
When I use the dreaded WMP and take a screen shot it posts a black box when I paste it into MS paint. All I really need is a way to make a decent quality screen shot of a paused dvd to make it into a poster for someone. Enlarging/printing it will be easy since I have access to printers that can print huge ass posters, but getting a good quality screen shot that I can toss into a photo editor for printing is all I need to learn how to do. I feel stupid for not knowing how to do this, but I've never had to before so I never learned how. Any ideas? Don't forget to live before you die. ![]() |

You can make excellent screenshots with WinDVD.
I am however prevented to tell you where to find it due to forum rules. ![]() |

Why not just use VLC. Open a DVD in VLC, get to the scene you want to capture. Right click and choose snapshot and it'll save a PNG or Jpeg (you can choose the filetype in the prefrences) of your scene. Simple. BTW VLC is free, it's released under the GNU license.

It's released under the GNU General Public License v2. GNU now has four licenses (if you ignore the versions of each), GPL, LGPL, AGPL and FDL.
I also suggest VLC, no need to dick with hardware overlay unless you really need to use the print screen key. Also, you shouldn't print the image too large as they are only 720x480 px (in NTSC-land). FDL is not a software license. . .

I know it's the Free Documentation License but it is still a license created by GNU an is listed on their licenses page. But now were are just being overly pedantic. I was merely pointing out that there is no single GNU license that can be referred to as "the GNU license".

I do have VLC media player, never tried using a DVD with it - didn't know it could play DVDs, but I'll try that. If that doesn't work, I'll try the other suggestions. Thanks a bunch. I was worried about blowing such a low res. pic too, but I'm not sure there's any other choice. Perhaps I could try putting the dvd on the projector at work and doing the old school taking a pic of it with the camera if nothing else works well first. I know it sounds irrational to grab a camera and take a picture of something displayed at low res expecting it to look better when blown up, but sometimes it does look pretty good. My home video projector needs a new bulb and I've been too lazy and cheap to get a replacement, plus the one at work is stronger than my home one. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try them. The snapshot from VLC was good enough. One of the other teachers sharpened up the pic. It was a screen shot from a 1969 Scooby Doo episode. I'm not sure what software he used to do the sharpening, but it looks really great on the poster now, somehow much better than even the original picture onscreen.
(This was full resolution at only 640x480) taken from the remastered DVD set. ![]() Don't forget to live before you die. ![]() |

Probably turned into a vector image, which works quite well with cartoons.

I'd use avidemux for getting frames out of mpeg2. It makes it easy to get exactly the right frame. It can deal with interlace. Then I'd use gimp or the like and scale (bicubic) the image so that it's at least 100dpi for your poster. Gimp has lots of filters to smooth that down and get rid of compression artifacts. Blurring then re-sharpening might help because you aren't sharpening noise.
I'd do things in this order: White balance Color correction Scale (bicubic) Smooth the noise out Sharpen the edges If you are using a professional print shop, expect to be told no. If you are a college professor, plagiarism and copyright infringement are taken very seriously. You could be fired. Back when I was in high school, I had some experience clearing works for educational non profit use. It was mostly out of print books that my history teacher wanted to reprint. Rights holders were mostly cooperative. http://www.snopes.com/disney/wdco/daycare.asp Disney isn't. I'm not sure committing copyright infringement in front of students is real cool. In a litigious modern society, a discussion on "fair use" would probably be helpful to them. I guess you are providing an example of "what not to do". No students were involved or knew about this when it happened (although that doesn't make it right). It was done back in 2007 in a different state, outside of a school building (the art teacher's computer was her own at home, and the printer was at her print shop, not at the school).
