If you are desperate about people not D/Ling from you, just make sure that you don't share any folders (just the incoming one), so as to keep your library mostly empty. NOBODY will D/L something they don't know is there. It's very lame though so i suggest against it.

On another view of the people D/Ling problem, its not a big problem a most times, at least in the sense that it reduces your surfing and D/Ling speed. Most people dont use their outgoing bandwidth a lot, so giving songs to people w/ napster is not going to slow you a lot, but it will slow you down a bit: a rough estimate would be 1/8 of the speed the guy receiving the song gets. So if say somebody is D/Ling at 3KB/s from you you lose like 0.375KB/s or 3Kb/s. Which on a 33K modem would be a 9-10% loss in DL speed. The % gets less with the more bandwidth you get. Also, have in mind that some connections are not synchronous: 56K, some xDSL variants (ADSL namely and a few others), and (consumer) satelite connections come to mind. In this case you might even be better off, because the less outgoing bandwidth you have, the less the impact on your incomming bandwidth. BUT, come to think of it again it might be a HUGE problem:

Let's say for example you have a (A)DSL connection with 1.5Mb/s Downstream and 128Kb/s Upstream. Supposing you get your 128Kb/s filled up with people, you'll only lose 16kbps off your 1500kbps (or is it 1536) or about 1% no big deal. But, on the other hand, since your upstream bandwidth would be "taken", you'd have another problem: you wouldn't be able to send requests for file fast enough! In other words, you would have enough speed to get stuff, but not enough to tell people to send them to you .Sounds weird, but thats TCP/IP (-tell me if i'm wrong here). You see, file tranfers (whether it is a webpage/image/mp3) over the net are like this:

F(ile): the file being transfered
C(lient): the person that wants to get F
S(erver): the computer that has F
  • C: Hey S, could you send me F
  • S: Sure, here's the first part
  • C: OK, i got it
  • S: here's the second part
    ...
    ...
    ...
  • S: And here's the last part
  • C: Got it, thanks a lot

The reason for this is that a part might get lost so C doesnt get it, or damaged so C rejects it. Anyway, i didn't design TCP/IP (and i'm not even sure i got the stuff right )

So, you need upstream bandwidth in order to use your downstream bandwidth, and the other way around. It's just that surfing/D/Ling uses more BW downstream and serving/U/Ling uses more upstream.

NOTE: The numbers are VERY rough estimates, but i don't think they are wildly off, but if you think that my logic is wrong, please tell me

So, if you dont get all or most of your B/W clogged up with people getting MP3s from you, imho the loss of speed is not a lot and therefore not too much of a problem, unless you are gaming at the time, but i don't think anybody in their right mind would have napster up while playing netgames (People with cable or better could prove me wrong ).

Napster sharification

Im blessed with a huge amount of mp3s, but I never share more than 100ish. My excuse is I gotta 56k dialup. if I share all my mp3s, in no time, about 30 folks are all trying to grab songs from me, and due to my 56kness, none of them are likely to get anything. If I stick to sharing 100ish, I only get 1 or 2 people taking songs from me at once, so they'll get full songs, I won't get too annoyed about losing all my outgoing bandwidth, an the world is a much happier place for all.

I like your reasoning gandalf.
Sometimes you just have to cut some people off from d'ling from you though. (I try not to do that though because it pisses me off when people do that to me)

Well its Saturday night and I'm alone
I've made no future plans
So I sit me down
And I pull out the little man
I aint got a girlfriend
And I don't have a date
But that's alright with me
Cause I love to masturbate

Back in the old days
I'd buy some magazines
A six pack of beer
And a tub of vaseline
Penthouse and Hustler
Were as good as it could get
But I hit the jackpot
When I found the internet

Now I'm beatin' my meat
Poundin' my pud
Yeah I'm jackin' off
Gotta good grip on my joystick
And it aint Micro-soft
I'm floggin' my dog
Spankin' the monkey
Aint computers great
I'll never leave home
Cause I love to masturbate

They got naked men and women
And all kinds of sex galore
Blondes, brunettes, and redheads
And Filipino whores
No matter what your into
You'll find your own dot com
There's even one for old chicks
Where I think I saw my mom

Chokin' that chicken
Rub the duck
Yeah I'm torquing low
I gotta good grip on my joystick
And I can't let it go
Row that skin boat
Stroke the log
Aint computers great
I'll never leave home
Cause I love to masturbate

Now they say things like "E-commerce"
With three 'W's and a dot
They say its for information
But I'm here to say its not
Now they're trading it on Wall Street
But they aint fooling me
Its all just a cover
For the porn industry

And I'm shaggin' my shaft
Cleanin' my gun
Hammerin' my nail
I'm a cyber-sex site surfer
With my own e-mail
I'm pettin' my snake
Jackin' off
Thank you ole Bill Gates
I'll never leave home
Cause I love to masturbate
