Grand Theft Auto Banned??

I am about to buy a PS2, I know it's been out for a long time, but I want one now, and of course, GTA3 came to mind for a game, since I had so much fun playing it at a friends.

Here's the thing, I am not sure where I heard this, but somebody told me GTA3 was banned, or re-released with a bit of content cut out in North America due to heavy violence. As they are still selling it in stores, it's obvious it's not, if it had been, banned completely, but was it for a while? Or is there a toned down version?

And with regards to Vice City, NAH, although it's probably gonna have slightly better gameplay, I just can't stand the 80's! I like new cars and stuff, not classics.

They are selling it in stores, I just want to know if at one point they did pull it off the shelves, or it it got changed.

In Australia, it did get pulled from the shelves, they edited about 8 seconds of the game, then put it back on the shelves again a month or so later, I believe....

They changed a fair bit actually. You cant pick up hookers and dont get paid for killing police or civilians, and one of the missions has been removed if i remember correctly.

They dont impact on the game itself much though.

in North America the game remains unharmed, to my knowledge. i can still pick up hookers, kill police, etc.

What's fun is picking up a hooker, doing the deed, then beating her up afterwards to get your money back :-)

But In CS you can kill THe Navy Seal Guys and you can always kill hostages and have hookers and shit like that. It's still total Bullshit that they Ban GTA.

yeah the aussie version is a bit pathetic now - not that my friends with PS2s would know - they have their modchips and bootdisks and internet and dvd burners...

in other words - buy your PS2, go ask for the 'guy out the back' and then you can get GTA3 & and everthing else you want, full version, with all the bells and hookers.

Okay, GTA:Vice City will be coming out very soon, so you might want to get that first. Then again, GTA3 is the game that started it all, so you might want to get that first...either way, I`m sure you`ll be happy.

And all of those PC gaming GTA fans, pick up Mafia...`tis an incredible game.

None of these games have the gameplay of games from 15-20 years ago... when the graphics weren't good, the gameplay had to be.

but it is hardly set in a real-life environment that any of us could find ourselves in. There are reasons to ban it, but i agree that they shouldn't

Masters of Orion 3 is out Late November- take heart. Although, I've noticed all the games I like are now sequels of games I have liked... no new blood.

I should have pointed it out...GTA3 was one of the first to have the vast interactive environments, not as in the first in the GTA series.
