Bug found in plugin:
Nullsoft Bookmarks v1.1 [ml_bookmarks.dll]

Winamp Version:
5.58 (no 3rd-party plugins, but not the classic "clean install", but this is the point of this bug report)

Bug description:
When installing (updating) Winamp into a directory in which a previous version was installed and an old Winamp.bm file in non-unicode format (Windows-1252, probably, here: German Windows, so some "Umlauts" were present in the Bookmark Names), the non-ASCII characters are misinterpreted and not correctly converted to UTF-8 for Winamp.bm8.

Example:

Old Winamp.bm contained a line saying: "Ö1" (bookmark name).
No Winamp.bm8 present.

Now you start Winamp 5.58 for the first time -> Winamp.bm8 is created.
But also Winamp.bm8 contains "Ö1" - in Windows-1252 (ANSI) encoding, NOT in Unicode UTF-8! You can easily check this in a Hex editor.

In the Media Library's "Bookmarks" view, the Bookmark is only called: "1".
The "Ö" is discarded.

The original Winamp.bm remains as is. The new Winamp.bm8 is identical.

Expected behavior:
On starting Winamp 5.58, if no Winamp.bm8 is present, but Winamp.bm is, Winamp.bm8 should be created under converting all non-ASCII characters from Winamp.bm to UTF-8 ones.
Winamp.bm should remain untouched, and also on future changes, Winamp.bm should retain all non-ASCII characters in their Windows-1252 encoding (no problem, for most "western" languages). Winamp.bm8 should be updated in Unicode.

Possible workaround:
Of course, it is easily possible to edit the affected Bookmark names in Media library to contain those Umlauts correctly again. Then, Winamp will update Winamp.bm8 in UTF-8 as it should; Winamp.bm keeps the ANSI ones.

So you see, this only affects the update process from Winamp <5.58 to 5.58, with bookmarks present with non-ASCII characters.

No big issue, but you maybe should have a look into it (preferably before all the people installed 5.58 and lost their Umlauts etc. )

Playlist Generator

I can't get the playlist generator to go beyond step 2 but the 3 little dots keep on going

[Edit > Koopa] Please read the first posting again, to see how to write a useful bug report. I've also removed your crossposting from Winamp Remote Forum

i think this is what kzuse was reporting, and if so i am confirming:

all my bookmarks, except for 3, were wiped out by the 5.58 install. that sucks obviously. like most people, i installed 5.58 over the existing 5.572 install (on win7).

i do have backups via the backup tool, but it sounds like bookmarks are now "newer" and won't like reinstating the old bookmark backups.

(pmp_android.dll) Android plugin not saving preferences.

(pmp_android.dll) Android plugin not saving preferences.

I have winxp sp3, winamp 5.58, Droid phone.
Winamp 5.58 was a upgrade from 5.0. also did a uninstall then a fresh install.

Skin: all
Windows Pro sp3
Intel p4, 4gb
Nvidia 6800GS 6.14.11.8250
Realtek High Def Sound 5.10.0.5125
DirectX 9.0c
pmp_android.dll ver 1.0

I tried using winamp to sync, put music files on my Droid Phone using the winamp media library, it puts all the music in the root of the drive.
I wanted to put it in a folder on the drive. ex. q:\Winamp.

Every time I tried to make changes to the preferences for the drive (see attached pic)
the changes will not keep/save. [in the pic these are the defaults, I change anything on that screen, but it does not save them]

How do I get these settings to save? What .ini file do I need to create?

Winamp 5.58 (build 2975)
Clean install, no 3rd-party skins or plugins
Language Pack: None (default English US)
Skin: Bug occurs with all of Bento, Winamp Modern and Classic skins

OS: Windows XP SP3 (32-bit)
Locale: Russian
Tech Specs: irrelevant, tested on 3 different PCs

Problem:
There are boxes instead of stars when you right-click an item in the Artist or Album tab (default Audio view in Local Media) and select "Rate". The bug occurs only for the first time you right-click & rate item, futher clicks show stars. If you click & rate items in the Playlist tab, it works fine.

Method of Reproduction:
1. Open Winamp
2. Open ML > Local Media > Audio
3. Right-click an item in the Artist or Album tab, select "Rate".

Not sure this is a universal bug, perhaps it has something to do with my Russian locale (CP 1251). Unfortunately I can't test it with a different locale at the moment.

Android Plug-in Problem...

Winamp 5.58 (x86) - Jun 29 2010
Winamp Language Pack - English US
Skin: Winamp Modern
Windows OS: Windows 7 Professional
System specs (mobo, cpu, ram): Intel Core2 Duo CPU T5450 @ 1.66GHz 1.67 GHz
Video Card, Video Card Drivers version: Mobile Intel GMA X3100
Sound Card, Sound Card Drivers version: High definition audio device
DirectX version: NA
Plugin (and version) affected by/causing the bug: Null Android Device Plug-in v1.0
Device: Verizon HTC Eris smartphone
Firmware: 2.1
Kernel: 2.6.29-8a03cb9a htc-kernel@and18-2#1
Build: 2.36.605.1 CL165907 release-keys
Software number: 2.36.605.1

-----

I'm trying to use Winamp to manage my songs on my Verizon HTC Eris smartphone. I want to change where Winamp places my songs. Once I'm in the preference setting I'm attempting to work with the portable device listed under: Media Library => Portables - mine shows as 'ANDROID Drive G:'.
The advance tab settings show as followed:

File Name Format: G:\<Artist>\<Album>\## - <Title>
Playlist Directory: G:
Supported format: mp3;wav;wma
Delete Empty Folders: checked
Playlist Writing Options: Slash at start of paths (default)

I'm attempting to change these setting to the following:

File Name Format: G:\Music\<Artist>\<Album>\## <Artist> - <Title>
Playlist Directory: G:\Music\Playlists
Supported format: mp3;wav;wma;m4a;aac

Once I enter my changes I select 'Save and Rescan'. The screen refreshes, and I'm put on the Media Library 'History' subcategory. I select my listed portable device again, and then the advance tab but it's not saving my changes. It shows the original settings I listed above. I tried changing the Playlist Writing Options but it still does not work.

Through Winamp I am able to see the song on my device. I'm also able to copy songs to my device but they're being place on the '/' (root) directory. I don't want that.

Also there seems to be an issue with Winamp playlists when working with the android. I create a playlist on the computer first. I then send that playlist to the android device. It shows that it copied the files to my device and I do see the new playlist on my device. But when I select the playlist it's empty. But if I selet the device I can see the files.

I just upgrade to the Winamp 5.58 and before I did everything worked fine. There is a difference I noticed. Prior to the 5.58 version my device was being recognized as a USB device. But now it's being seen as an ANDROID device using the android plug-in. The USB plug-in won't even recognize my device.

Hope I've provided enough info. Let me know if you need any more information.

Winamp Installation Wizard still corrupts 3rd party plugins. (something to do with the DLL rebaser or some such)

VGMStream, MGME, 64thnote and probably more, affected.

-Winamp 5.581 (5.5.8.2985) - clean install [upgrade/reinstall]
-Winamp Language Pack used (if any) [none]
-System specs (mobo, cpu, ram) [ASUS P6T, Intel i7 920 2.66ghz, 6gig DDR3 Patriot Gamer RAM]
-Windows OS [Windows 7 x64 Home Premium, English] Ed Hardy Clothing
-Video Card, Video Card Drivers version [BFG 8800 GT 512mb, v258.96 x64]
-Sound Card, Sound Card Drivers version [XFI Extreme Music, latest drivers as of today]
-DirectX version (start > run > dxdiag) [Latest Redistributable as of today]

broken built-in editor with Milkdrop2.21

I have noticed, the text editors for Milkdrop presets don't show the preset code correctly - instead you see a single blinking line of unreadable characters. Must be some kind of ASCII conversion problem or missing font, dunno.

WinXP professional SP3, english
Winamp in english too

[EDIT --> DJ Egg]
Yup. Looks like something went slightly wrong with the unicode conversion.
We were already aware of the problem and will hopefully fix it up soon. Thanks.

so thats a workaround, but what is the actual problem? meaning the blame lies where?

is there a way to fix it without reverting?

[Edit --> DJ Egg]

No, it'll need fixing in the code, there's no workaround.
The problem is somewhere in the unicode conversion code in MD v2.22

Bug:
Nullsoft Tray Control v2.41 [gen_tray.dll]

The windows 7 implementation of the taskbar plugin allowing winamp to display play/pause/etc icons over the winamp icon on the taskbar when hovered occasionally loses the icons and is unable to display them, merely displaying blank icon spaces instead.

How to recreate
Allow a large playlist of 20 songs to play, do not utilize the taskbar tray buttons to control them. After a given number of pauses or commands the buttons will disappear from the taskbar when the winamp icon is hovered over.

Temporary fix
-Restarting winamp
-Toggling the gen_tray.dll plugin off and then on

[EDIT --> DJ Egg]
gen_tray is for showing winamp control buttons in the system tray (enabled via Prefs -> Plugins -> General -. gen_tray -> config).
The Win7 taskbar control buttons are built into winamp.exe
(note: similar issues have already been reported, and it's being looked into).

pmp_usb: syncing playlists very slow now with 5.581

I tried posting this in the Tech Support forum a few days ago to see if anyone else had seen the behavior before opening a bug report, but I got responses, so here goes:

I've used pmp_usb for many years to sync several different portable players in MSC mode. The files on my PC are FLAC, and I sync selected playlists to the players, transcoding to MP3 during the sync.

I never really had a problem with this until 5.58 (and 5.581). Transcoding and syncing of the FLAC/MP3 files still works as expected, but the last step where Winamp updates the m3u playlists on the player is incredibly slow. Used to take seconds in previous builds, now it takes 7-8 minutes on a large playlist (500-700 songs). I'm syncing several of these large playlists, so the final "syncing playlists" operation takes around 20 minutes to complete. Again, I'm only talking about the part where the m3u files are written to the player (the transcoding is of course expected to take some time).

I've watched the destination folder for the playlists on the portable player in Windows Explorer and noticed that Winamp seems to be writing the playlist over and over and over again. It seems like some horribly inefficient loop was introduced in the new code. By hitting F5 (refresh) in Windows Explorer repeatedly while Winamp is writing the playlists you can watch the m3u file size grow slowly, return to 0, grow slowly again to a slightly larger size than last time, go back to 0, and repeat this cycle many, many times before finally writing the complete file.

For short playlists (30-40 songs) it doesn't seem to happen. Or if it does happen, I guess it's still fast enough that it's not really noticeable.

PC:
XP SP3 - all updated applied

Portable:
Sansa Fuze & Clip+ (problem happens on both)

Steps to reproduce:
Create a large (~500 song) playlist in ML
Attach a MSC mode player
Go to the player properties and select the new playlist for syncing
Sync the player
File transcode/transfer works normally, "playlist syncing" step at the end takes forever

I can provide more technical details or samples of the playlists if needed, but I'm guessing it's not really relevant. The problem started with 5.58 and I know there were a lot of changes in the pmp plugins, so it almost has to be a code issue.

S3M Regression in Module Decoder

I upgraded from 5.552 to 5.581 and noticed a significant distortion in playing strshine.s3m, available here.

The problem starts at time 1:32 and continues through the rest of the song, though it can happen earlier if you seek backward after the problem starts. Only some voices on the right channel seem to be affected. They're much louder than normal and sound warbly.

I uninstalled, went back to 5.552, verified the problem didn't occur, uninstalled again, installed 5.581, and verified the problem did occur. Perhaps this happened with S3M fixes mentioned in the release notes for 5.56?

To start, here's all the information I can easily give you about my Winamp install and my PC: Winamp 5.581 clean install
Bento skin
XP Pro service pack 3, 2.8 GHz Intel Pentium Processor, 1GB of RAM

This is the first time I've ever reported any kind of software bug so if you need anything else from me let me know and I'll do my best to provide it.

Winamp 5.581 will not recognize my Creative Zen X-Fi. I've had this problem with the last few versions of Winamp. The last version that worked was 5.57. I managed to fix the problem in 5.581 by replacing the current Nullsoft Creative NJB Plug-in (pmp_njb.dll) with the one from 5.57. I didn't think to check the version of the plug-in that comes packaged with Winamp 5.581 before replacing it, but the version I'm using now (the one from 5.57) is version 0.54. Since this has been an issue for the last few Winamp releases, I'd appreciate it if it could be taken care of. Again, I'm new to this so please let me know if you need anything else from me. Thanks.

When transcodig mp3 tracks that have cover art with MP4/LC-AAC encoder, the resulting m4a files have all ID3 tags copied, except the cover art. This is an issue for a long time, not from this version. This is annoying when I'm using Winamp for copying music to my Android phone, since then those music files don't have cover art.

Yes I have do this.

To reproduce some bugs, we may also need a link to a zipped sample file
(eg. an .mp3, .aac, .wav, .mid file, etc, which exhibits the bug).

The file "ml_plg.dll" is attached.

You can use stashbox.org, sendspace.com or mediafire.com for uploading, and then post the download link here. Note, if you have a Junior Member status, then submitted url's will only be visible to admins/mods.
Thank you I don't need this information.

I don't know if anyone had a chance to look at this yet, but here's another detail that might help. The incredibly long time it was taking to sync the playlists was so frustrating I couldn't take it anymore, so I replaced the 5.581 version of pmp_usb.dll with the 5.572 version and all is back to normal. The syncing playlists step once again takes only seconds. If I put the 5.581 version of pmp_usb back, the playlist syncing step takes forever again.

So I at least have a workaround for now, but please let me know if there's anything else I can do to help get this resolved. I'd be happy to provide any additional info, testing, etc.

Autotagging issue...

Not sure if this is "intended" operation, or an actual bug, but if the setting for "Metadata Reading" is set to the "recommended", i.e. "Load metadata when file(s) are played or viewed in the play list editor", instead of, "Read metadata when file(s) are loaded into Winamp", then the autotagging does not work right for ripping CDs. Basically, if you use the "recommended" setting, when you go to the drive in the library tab, you get a list of "unknown artist - unknown album" tracks, and it doesn't seem to matter if the settings in the CD Ripping section specifies to add this data per song or not. Winamp never checks for it, all files get written out as unknown - unknown, and you end up having to manually autotag them, then manually rename each file as well.

Seems to me, for ripping, either looking at a CD in the library should result in the data being looked up anyway, *or* the "Automatically add tags..." setting in the CD ripping should override the behavior, and attempt to look up the data online, as each transfer of each track takes place. It took me several CDs, and a lot of looking, to figure out why the heck it wasn't working. I didn't immediately guess at the problem, and I seriously doubt most other people would have gone, "Oh, wait, maybe its just not loading them because of this apparently unrelated setting!", any more than I did initially.

spotty recognition of creative zen mozaic

First off, my problem seems to have been encountered and documented at least once before in this thread: http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=315981, and also by jar83 upthread.

Winamp 5.581 Pro, squeaky clean install
Windows 7 Home Premium x64
Intel Core 2Duo, 6 gig of RAM, Realtek sound card, ATI HD vid card
DirectX 11 (not being super specific as I don't think it's a hardware problem)

Plugin affected: pmp.p4s.dll, possibly specifically v0.8 (I think, anyways)

I've had this problem on and off with a number of recent versions, not just 5.581, but I couldn't tell you how far back (a year at least?). Basically, when I connect my Creative Zen Mozaic, despite Windows 7 recognizing it and loading it correctly right away, Winamp sometimes did not. Some combination of restarting Winamp/computer and/or reconnecting the USB cable could usually fix this. When it did load, sometimes it would load it incorrectly as "empty": under the "Portables" screen, it would show the Device Name with the correct capacity and filled percentage (ex. currently 15% free), but once clicking on the Device Name, not load/show any playlists or audio files whatsoever, just 0/0/0 empty. Curiously, it does load the video subtab (and video files), and I can send audio files to the device, which will then show up in the device library just fine.

What happened last time I encountered this problem is eventually Winamp consistently refused to load my zen properly no matter what I did (either not fully loading it or not recognizing it at all) and I did a clean install and managed to get it working again (I chalked it up to a 3rd party plugin issue). But now the same exact problem is occuring. Before doing this most recent clean install, I was unable to get Winamp to recognize my player period, and I tried a variation of fix that Bob mentioned in the above thread (uninstalling the other portable plugins) and was able to get that installation of Winamp to recognize my player again to the point where I could transfer files (and have those recognized) but I still could not view existing files/playlists on the device. (I didn't try to see if using the previous version of pmp.p4s.dll eliminates the problem, though.) After clean install, seeing the exact same limited functionality (so it didn't seem to make a difference). Here's a summary of what works and what doesn't work:

Works:
-Creative Zen Mozaic is recognized by its device name
-Has correct capacity and percentage free in device window
-Video subtab and video files within seem to load fine
-Can transfer new audio files to device and they will show correctly in main device library window
-Can create new playlists and add newly transferred recognized audio files to them
-Can stream newly recognized files from player

Doesn't work:
-Can't view any previously loaded audio files on the device
-Can't view/add to any previously created playlists

I took the time to write all this out because winamp is really by far the best tool to manage this device, so plz plz plz any fixes would be deeply appreciated!

S.o.: Windows 7 Ultimate 64
Bug: in_wm.dll

Winamp plays tracks for about 1 minute and then stops suddenly, reporting an error with in_wm.dll file.
Removing it from plugins folder everything works fine but wma files are not recognized and they can't be played no more.

Winamp 5.581
Problem: compressor of in built equalizer works incorrectly.
When possible of overclipping arrives, compressor reduces amplifying coefficient asymmetrically for both polarities of signal and/or non smoothly.
Additional non harmonic distortion arrives (especially well-heard on low frequency bass line without mid/high frequency masking).
Test:
Turn input level (PRE) +3..+10db or EQ sliders 70;180;320Hz ar +3..+10db and play some ambient style track with high level low frequency part.
For example: Ryan Farish – Anthem of Hope, 320K mp3 (from begin).

Distortions are well-heard at all positions of volume slider.

Send a message via AIM to MrSinatra
try 5.6, 5.581 is no longer supported. there is a known issue where files put on some ipods can be seen via winamp, but not on the ipod when disconnected.

As MrSinatra wrote, 5.6 is the only supported version and 5.6 specific bugs should go in the Post All Winamp 5.6 Official Plugin Bug Reports In This Thread thread only.
