seriously your host says they can do nothing about it ?? any host should be able to apply firewall rules to be able to resolve this (and anything running without such a setup has me instantly concerned).

as blocking things on the DNAS is generally a last resort in a hosted setup and repeated bad traffic is something that should be blocked before it's even gotten to the DNAS i.e. via firewall rules, etc.

Yes host says there is nothing he can do although as you said they could apply firewall rules etc to resolve this but he just cannot be bothered especially when host has 2,000 users with different issues to resolve. I'm having this ripper holding 80 out of 100 listener slots everyday at least for 2-6 hours (not continuously) and there's nothing I can do. Banning IP, banning subnet, nothing touches him as he comes back with new IPs all time. From 30 steady listeners suddenly listeners jump up to a 100. When that happens I just login to my admin DNAS to check and I see that connected duration is the same for all 80 IPs.

i'd get a new host then. as this is very likely to be something affecting all of the users of their setup.

also what's the user agent of those connections reported as ? (this is an open question for those seeing it).

True a new host maybe will be the solution but who knows!

User agent of those connections are mostly Mozilla and chrome but as soon as have this ripper again (probably very shortly) I will give a full report (image maybe) of the user agent and his connected duration.

Ok Im attaching as promised an image of the ripper who has just started ripping my station by using various IPs. I could show the IPs but I don't know if Im allowed by the forum.

Shoutcast 2.4.0.147 not stable

Shoutcast 2.4.0.147 not stable on Debian Linux x64.

When we have more than 320+ listeners, cpu goes to 100% & and the shoutcast Server crashes.

It's this a bug or Debian x64?

not that is known off and really more information is needed from you...

have you increased ulimit -n (as per the docs) ?

does it really crash i.e. process seg faults or you just cannot connect / a load of errors appear in the log output ?

OK, i try this:

#sc_serv tuning for sysctl.conf:

net.ipv4.tcp_window_scaling = 1
net.ipv4.tcp_timestamps = 1
net.ipv4.tcp_sack = 1
net.ipv4.tcp_syncookies = 1
net.ipv4.tcp_synack_retries = 2
fs.file-max = 798200
net.ipv4.tcp_fin_timeout=25
net.core.rmem_max=16777216
net.core.wmem_max=16777216
net.ipv4.tcp_rmem=4096 87380 16777216
net.ipv4.tcp_wmem=4096 87380 16777216
fs.file-max=798200

Then run sysctl -p to load those changed values.

#Increase the ulimit for maximum open files
#Add this to /etc/security/limits.conf

shoutcast hard nofile 10240
shoutcast soft nofile 10240
root hard nofile 10240
root soft nofile 10240

OK i see the logs:

ERROR [MICROSERVER] Could not create signal pipe [Increase the open files (ulimit -n) limit]

then you'll need to ensure the DNAS is either restarted and the change is detected or do anything else needed to ensure that the user account under which the DNAS is being run is using the value as well (as running it under a control panel could be using a different user account and the changes have not been applied to it for example).

either way, unless the DNAS is able to detect the higher level of handles it can use, it's going to keep showing the issue you are seeing (which is the DNAS working correctly for when it's not able to use the resources it needs).

if the DNAS keeps reporting 1024 then something is not right with the setting of those parameters and i can only suggest trying to find a similar post from a debian setup or see if you can find some other information which relates to the issue but is not SHOUTcast specific. as there's little we can do if the DNAS is not being provided the resources it needs.

I run Debian and had those same issues. This new DNAS release "should" have resolved the crash issues but I havent updated yet.

You def need to have shoutcast ulimit settings higher. Make sure you save and restart for it to take affect. I dont think its a debian issue. Its an issue with you not saving your settings properly.

electroradio's issue is not a crash - it is purely not having the required number of file handles available to be used. so there is a complete distinction between a crash and the DNAS preventing additional connections due to not having the rights to do so.

and it shouldn't matter what flavour of linux is used (as we're using debian and centos based installs for development and testing), they all should work as long as you've got things correctly able to increase the ulimit -n (unless this is running under a VM and it's messing up what the virtualised OS is able to allocate - though that should not be the case iirc).

v2.4.1 released which fixes most of the issues which have been reported as well as some nice new additions.
