USEFUL LINKS TO FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS & COMMON PROBLEMS

Please check these first before posting a new thread.

In the unlikely event that these links don't provide your answer:
When posting a new topic, please try to be as clear as possible.
The more precise & detailed info you can give, the better !
Unobvious spelling mistakes and bad phrasing do not help !
It also helps if the title of the topic is relevant to the problem.
Please include any relevant system specifications, especially if
your problem is more Windows related rather than a Winamp one.
eg. CPU + Clock speed | RAM | Windows OS | Soundcard | Videocard
Browser + version | Connection type + speed | DirectX version | etc.
Also provide details of any third party Winamp plugins you are using.

Further tips on how to get quicker answers
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=32222

If none of the above are of any help, please try the search facility b4 posting a new thread.
It's still quite possible that your question has already been asked and answered before.

Examples of some of the more popular search keywords:
MMSYSTEM032; MMYSTEM002; MMSYSTEM004; Invalid page fault; kernel32.dll; msvcrt.dll; Playlist size/resizing; Line-in commands; plug-in configuration; MicroSoft & Windows are a total p.i.t.a. / p.o.s.; help me; etc. etc. etc.

And remember . . . always read the FAQ first !

You also now have the further options of checking out each individual forum's "Read This First" section; and you can also visit the "Tech Support's Greatest Hits" forum for even more FAQ's.

Please feel free to add any more useful links below !

Also, please only post your question in one of the forums, preferably
the one that you feel is the most relevant. Posting in more than one
forum is what we refer to as crossposting and is not cool whatsoever !
If no-one has answered your question after a few days and your thread
disappears off the first page, simply post a reply in the same thread
to bring it back to the top again. A simple "Please help, anyone ?"
will suffice, unless you can add any more info to help us further.

DJ Egg (I put a space in, is that better?) -

I don't know if you're interested in expanding your Masterpiece or not, but ...

The following thread link and website link include an apparent solution to some downloading problems, as well as an archive of prior Winamp versions, which people might find useful for any number of reasons.

Here's the thread link (see the 7/6 reply):

http://forums.winamp.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000099.html

Here's the website link from the above thread:

Cheers again Rev. Ike
Another link added !

Yes, that's loads better [DJ Egg] . . . oh yeeharr !

It's most certainly destined to be a forever open & expanding thread for sure !

Tho' it's rapidly turning in to another extension of the almighty "waffle" phenomenon !
And why the hell not, eh !?!
Anything to keep this as near to the top of page 1 as possible . . . and what better reason than waffles can there possibly be ?

Grrrr Grrrr

Why oh why won't people read this thread first ?

Every time I visit this forum, half of the new threads are the same old questions over and over again !

I've lost count as to how many times I've posted a link to this thread for the answer !

Yup, you certainly were right SLK [regarding your first reply above].

Ahhh well, shucks, at least I tried . . .

This thread, gandalf's and the FAQ should be required reading for every one. Here's what I propose:

You (nullsoft) make a new class of member. Call it whatever, but it would be between Junior Member and Unregistered. After, say 5 posts, you'd become a Junior, and every thing else would be the same. Every time a unregistered user, or that new thing (newbie?) posts, they'd be redirected to these threads/FAQ before posting. It wouldn't let them return to the forum until they have clicked on a certain number of links, and a certain amount of time has expired. Then they could enter the "Reply to Topic" script thing. I don't know if this is possible with UBB, but UBB sux anyway, and it's about tie things got changed.

Do I make sense?

Yeah, that made sense. But I think the way you described it would make it way too annoying for those newbies who have already checked the required pages. I think something less extreme would be appropriate, though.

How about it only forces you to read the pages once or twice? Also, there should be a great big huge disclaimer announcing that this forcing of reading stuff only happens once, so newbies don't get scared off, and that they should read the FAQ BEFORE POSTING, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS!!!

I apologize for my horrendous grammar, but I'm just to sleepppppp..............THUD

OK, time for my two cents (oh no, not again!!!)

Short reply -

Repetitive questions are only annoying if you allow them to be annoying. If you see "wav to mp3" or "mp3 to wav" (or whatever) in the topic name, simply skip that topic. (This takes 1 second)

Or, put the links to the FAQ, DJ Egg's Masterpiece, and Gandalf's Masterpiece all in one text file, and copy that text file as your reply. (This takes 20 seconds)

As I have mentioned before, it is hypocritical to complain about people who post "repeat" questions and then proceed to post "repeat" bashings yourself. Which wastes more space, 20 posts about mp3/wav conversions, or 80 posts about ridiculing the first 20 posts?

When I checked out Winamp today, one forum had 3 consecutive threads regarding mp3/wav conversion. There were TWENTY total replies to these 3 threads. There should have been THREE total replies, each simply citing the above-mentioned links.

Long reply -

(Yeah, I know, you thought the above answer was long enough)

First, realize that there will always be some people who DON'T notice the "read the Winamp FAQ" instruction.

Second, realize that these same people DO notice the names of the different forums. Often, very methodically, they cross-post to all the different forums that they think are applicable to their problem.

USING the above behavior (instead of trying to FIGHT it), why don't you forum administrators do the following:

(1) Create a new forum named "Top Ten Winamp Questions".

(2) Position this forum at the top of the list (above "General Discussions").

(3) Create ten topics (duh!) dealing with everyone's most hated questions: "mp3 to wav", "wav to mp3", "where to get Mp3's", etc.).

(4) At the end of each topic, remind people about forum etiquette (cross-posting, duplicate posting, etc.), should they decide their problem still requires the posting of a new topic.

(5) Lock those ten threads (no replies).

(6) Update or replace any of those ten threads as necessary.

The FAQ, DJ Egg's thread, and Gandalf's thread already provide most of the information that would be needed for such a "Top Ten" list.

Benefits of this idea:

You wouldn't need to expand the FAQ (unless you really wanted to), you wouldn't need to keep moving DJ Egg and Gandalf back to the top of the page, you wouldn't need to keep linking to DJ Egg and Gandalf in your replies, you wouldn't need to re-design the entire UBB format, etc. etc. etc.

And I can almost guarantee this idea would significantly reduce the number of repeat questions in the other forums.

Also, as long as I'm babbling, here's three other ideas. I know the first two would be a lot of work, but I think they would reduce confusion, especially among newer visitors:

(1) Take "General Discussions" and "Ask Steve", which are two vague catch-all forums, and realign them into "General Discussion: Winamp" and "General Discussion: Non-Winamp".

(2) Combine "Technical Support - Plugins" and "Hug-A-Plug-In" into a single forum.

(3) Retire "Justin's YadaYada" forum.

OK, I'll shut up now ...
