Wow..hey reverend...do you think you could pass along some of your intelligence to those who have none? you know...the people that don't read the FAQ..i mean we all know it is only common sense, but we also know that those people don't have that....imagine if they did..wow....

SLK -

I think the problem is more due to laziness than stupidity (but I could be wrong). It's like a kid who wants his parents to just give him an answer instead of looking it up himself. Instead of telling their kid 400 times in a row to "look it up", good parents will find a way to "trick" the kid into learning to look up things himself.

It seems obvious that a lot of people ignore the "Please read the Winamp FAQ before posting" and "search" links at the top of the page, and go straight to the list of forums instead. So it just occurred to me that creating a Top Ten forum might be an easy way to "trick" these people into finding some of the answers for themselves.

Yippee !

Another suggestion . . .
Maybe people would pay more attention if the links at the top of the page [FAQ / Search etc] were small flashing ani-gif's instead of just plain text !?!

I've got another idea - create a forum named "MP3 to WAV, WAV to MP3, etc. - please read" and place on the top.

Arggghhhh, No ! It still ain't workin' for some folks.
The READ THIS FIRST definitely needs to be bigger and in flashing lights [ani-gif] . . . maybe they're a bit myopic or something . . . either that or just plain divvy . . . probably both !
A mass flame . . . ooh, be careful Egg !

Anyway, back 2 the top . . . and let's try again !

Heres an idea how about a Filter such as
If Subject = “wav to Mp3” go to (a page that states you are a loser that Question has all ready be asked you are now being redirected to the FAQ) then delete the post an redirect them to the FAQ
Other filters could be
Mp3 to wav
CD to wav
Etc etc
Might take a lot of filters and they would not get rid of all of them but it certainly would cut them down

Nice one Sparky !

Anyway, I've just figured it out !
All these new posts are actually been made by "people" who've been paid by the likes of Real & Sonique [etc] to try and put others off downloading Winamp.
Well, I've got news for ya . . . your attempts have failed and we've got you sussed !

Yeah, like errr, far out dude !
What's that all about then ?
I checked out the link but didn't dare click on anything on the page. It sounds kinda dangerous ?!?!

Anyway, luckily I didn't buy Win98 . . . I'm using Win95 v4 [Final Edition] with loads of add-ons and enhancements. It's much more compatible with most software, whereas Win98 [all versions] is full of loadsa crappy bugs !

I've also noticed that you've "spammed" a few other threads with this post.

Totally far out, eh !?!?

I may, perhaps, be one of the losers referenced below--but the error message that I receive does not include 'MMSYSTEM004'. Mine simply reads 'The specified device is alralready in use. Wait until it is free, and then try again.' It is from Nullsoft waveOut plug-in v2.02 (x86). Does this make a difference in the actions I should attempt? Thanks and sorry if my question is irritatingly dumb.

Recurring Questions

One of the problems you failed to address regarding recurring questions without reading your forum, lies in the above page, DJEgg's 'must read first' linkpage - if you're not too embarrassed to look. When one is looking to gain knowledge, having to waste time reading about some 'inside' whatever (jokes?) (which you could save for your private emails to each other), i.e. pancakes, syrup and/or whatever extraneous subject, going on & on & on, is very frustrating to the seeker & they give up & post whatever it is they are trying to find. IF 'must read' is the cream of the crop, one may come to the conculsion the rest must be much worse. I have read alot of your forum entries (probably 8 hours worth) & found 3 or 4 pages of information worthy enough to bookmark, meaning I have seen where you have been helpful, but that is alot of time is spent finding information, weeding through alot of extraneous junk. I still haven't found what I'm looking for (hey, isn't that a song?) Anyhow, I agree with Rev. Ike about the solution.

It tells alot about each of you, how you conduct yourself, personally & professionally . But I did notice that those were posted last year, so maybe most of you have grown or moved on somewhere that doesn't irritate you so much. You can see others shortcomings quick enough, but blind to your own - i.e. you talk about everyone being stupid, well, you had every chance to come up with a/the solution(s) as Rev Ike did, but you chose the lazy way by bashing everyone else. The same adjectives you named for others you were simultaneously portraying.

By the way Rev. Ike, I found your replies to always be on the subject & I respect you for that. When I see you as the contributor I am pretty sure I can expect to learn something (Those are the majority of the pages I've bookmarked). Thank You! And DJEgg,the reason I went to your 'must read first' link is most of your entries I read also seem to be relevant & 'meaty', which I respect. So you can see why I was/am so disappointed to come across a page you linked to as'must read first' being nothing more than time-consuming trash. Even the bit of wisdom from Rev Ike was time wasted (but also time saved - [to stop the ramblings from going on & on & on], so simultaneously VERY NECESSARY!) for Winamp users going to the forum to find answers (which is the beef about weeding/reading for answers which is your beef).

Sorry, but I don't quite follow you here . . .
Maybe I'm missing the point, but what do you mean exactly?
What "read this first" link are you referring to? This old thread maybe?

Since this thread was created over 8 months ago, we now have a Tech Support Greatest Hits forum, where this particular thread has been minimized down to the bare essentials, ie. Useful Links only & no private banter whatsoever:
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=36850

The whole concept of a TSGH forum originated from this very thread.
You've got to start somewhere!

If I've misinterpreted your point in any way, then please re-explain in plain English.

Broken Links

DJEgg

I would like to bring the broken links from your FAQ to your attention.

Tutorial on how to use CDDB function:

The links posts seem to be locked. Clicking on the link gives the You are not logged in or you do not have permission to access this page message.

RE: Real Player related problems

The error message for this one is Error getting compiled page.

Please do not PM me for tech support. Any request for tech support through PM will be ignored.

Cheers for pointing this out JM.
I'm getting "this forum is not available at the moment" for the first two,
and a long list of "Error getting compiled page" for the 3rd.
I'll look into this later & try to sort it out.
There must be some editing going on at the mo . . .
. . . and they've probably moved the Ask Archives again!

Yup, I've finally found out why some of these links aren't currently accessible.
Full details here:
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....753#post243753

btw, I'll no longer be updating the links in the first post of this thread, but the version in TSGH will continue to be updated on a highly regular basis.

MMSYSTEM032 - still no success after the FAQ/Thread help

I upgraded my PC and now I receive the well-known MMSYSTEM032 error when I try to play MP3's. I've tried all of the advice in the threads and the FAQ and I still can't play MP3's with Winamp any more. The sound card and the Winamp installation appear to otherwise work (I can play Audio CD's fine with Winamp). Here's some details:

1. I get the well known MMSYSTEM032 "specified format cannot be translated or supported" error.
2. I've tried both the newest (non-beta) version of Winamp and my old version 2.75.
3. My current system configuration information: AMD Athlon 1.6 GHz, Creative SB Live!, Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.2222 A, 512 MB RAM, over 33 Gigs available on HD, MSI GeForce 2 Ti 64 MB DDR graphics card, Direct X 8.0

I've tried all this stuff:

see attached file

I'd greatly appreciate any help you can give. I'm not a newbie at this stuff, but I'm also definitely not a pro. Thanks for your help.

Heyhey . . . I know . . .

Why the hell was this ancient out-of-date thread revived?

This was the original version which eventually got moved to:
TSGH -> Useful Links

The version in TSGH is updated on a regular basis, but this one hasn't been touched for over a year . . . I honestly thought it'd been deleted or vanished into the depths of the archives never to be seen again

You could at least've revived one of the relevant mmsystem032 threads instead.

Anyway, as with all mmsystem errors . . . it's nothing to do with Winamp.
It's a soundcard drivers issue or a missing system codec to blame.

ps. Nice one Bizz LOL
