win7 file permissions angering me!

ok, once again, BP, many thx...

i was still having weird issues, and so i did some hunting, first was this invaluable tool:

an absolutely priceless and easy way to take ownership.

but after that, as explained in this thread, you still have to redo permissions, and so i used what was in this thread and this link:

and my own guesses from reading everything that i HOPE i finally have things straightened out, and now have access to everything. i'd love to find a reg hack for this too however.

if i knew of a file system that both win7 and mac natively worked well with, and ignored all this permissions bullshit, i would use that.

(i understand permissions are important, but not in this case. this isn't sensitive info, i should be easily able to tell the OS "this is public info, don't restrict access.")

i can only hope future rips won't get screwy, meaning they inherit what seems to work now.

If you had asked me, I would have showed you how close you were in the real dialogs. It was only one page away and less complex than you think. Too late now.

And again, that tool only does what is VERY easy to do from the dialog boxes. If you had asked, it would have been a reply of about three lines extra.

There is no "registry hack" for this. Once it is set correct, it will stay correct.

It is called FAT32 as using in Windows98. But it is hopeless when you have a disk problem as no where near as resilient as NTFS.

If you actually had some belief in what I have told you, and actually tried it yourself, you would see that future rips are not "getting screwy" anymore.

This is all traced back to the original folder that was created. That had been dragged from an odd location and had odd security settings. Now you have corrected them, they will STAY corrected. Security rights (and ownership) is all about what the PARENT folder's settings are. Once they are correct, the rest is automatic.

Googling for random tools will only confuse the situation.



Seriously - you are getting angry at the wrong thing. Do not get angry at your computer because you do not understand it. Computers are complex, but also easy to control with knowledge. Do you throw spanners at the car when it doesn't work?

BP, i don't know why you are getting angry at me? i would not have been able to do anything without your help. i just thought i'd share this stuff.

i did exactly what you told me to do and it worked on the one set of folders, but later it did not work on another set. i am sure you could have walked me thru it but i just wanted to get things as close to easy buttonish as possible... i'm really not that interested in knowing the how or why of this situation, i just wanted to get everything working, thats all. (i also think when i moved some things i thought i had corrected they might have reverted, but i'm not sure, and really no matter now)

again, i thank you for your help, without which i'd be stuck.
