If you've never been a cable technician before...

Don't bother. This job sucks.

It's been about 20 years since I was a cable technician...

It does suck, but at least it pays shit

I don't think the pay is worth the bullshit, honestly. This is the first "customer-oriented" job I've ever held, and I'm ready to go back to the construction sector.

What I really hated about the job is that I was always late. Every door was a new customer that was chapped about waiting extra hours or days. Then to go back to the shop to get squeezed by the boss to get more installs done.

When I figured out that I was getting 20% more installs done than anyone else in the shop...... ballistic!

In time, you'll grow a thicker hide from customer service work, but even with that, the day to day grind will make you a grump.

It really made me pretty jaded. Most people are really not very nice.

Welcome to the real world? I've been in the real world for quite some time now. I've worked out in >110f heat and humidity with sunlight blazing down and unrelenting gnats and mosquitos. I've worked in blizzards with ambient temperatures below zero with wind chills below -20f, wind speeds over 40mph, snowflakes flying into my eyes, over a foot of snow on the ground, gloves freezing to drilling tools instantly when I pick them up. I've worked up on mountains and down in riverbeds. I've lived and worked through the most devastating hurricane in recorded history... Initial recovery efforts lasted almost a year, starting the same day that Katrina made landfall; I spent almost half a year working 15-16hr days 7 days a week helping with the recovery. I've operated numerous types of heavy construction equipment. I ran my own construction/repair crew. I've driven dump trucks. I've installed countless runs of concrete storm drain pipes. I've operated geotechnical drill rigs and manhandled heavy drilling tools for 12-16hrs a day for weeks on end. I managed and was entirely responisble for a 30+ acre material/equipment stockyard with millions of dollars worth of supplies and tens of millions of dollars worth of equipment in it. This is the real world. Being a cable installer is just bullshit.

@roh:
Apparently, nothing's changed since you did this kind of work. They just offer more services now, the equipment is more expensive, and the tools are more expensive. The bullshit is still the same. One of the jobs I had today was supposed to be a simple amplifier install. Took me over three hours to figure out that the tap up on the pole wasn't putting out enough signal for the amp to do much good. If they'd have given me a signal meter to use until mine is shipped, I could've been out of there in less than 45 minutes. I rewired a bunch of shit for nothing...

I'm sorry if I missed it, but what made you change your job?

Jesus loves you [yes, you] so much, he even died for you so that you will not need to die, but live forever

I wish I could do all that instead of deal with bullshit and customers. Alas my feet would give out after about 4 hours, stupid flat feet.

If those were my only two choices, I'd probably choose working in construction too. I'd rather see bullshit from mother nature than bullshit from people.

I work with people now, but you'd be surprised how much less bullshit I get from kids compared to adults.

Don't forget to live before you die.
