Dammit.

This is my first post with my post-format PC. I lost everything. My stories, my contacts, my pictures, porn, and especially music. 10% of my hard drive was once filled with the tender melodies ranging from Elvis Costello to The Beastie Boys, Billie Holiday to Wu Tang. I'm completely shot down and out and just completely upset.

All my game files, all my programs (especially the ones I downloaded), and just the whole fucking thing has been wiped clean. Four years pissed away like a candle in a hurricane.

This really really blows.

That and my scroll button keeps doing this weird thing where instead of scrolling it just leaps down the page despite changes to its fuctionality and such.

I'm just really upset right now.

It's way too hard to make a backup of a 160gb hard drive.

How did it fuck up before? For future reference, if the computer won't boot up, that does NOT mean your files are lost and that you should format your hard drive immediately. Take your hard drive out of your computer and put it in another (working) computer, slaving the drive onto the existing master. Then transfer your files to that hdd or get another hdd to put it all on and format the first one.

i dont think he needs to be told what he already knows. being told *you shoulda backed up* would really annoy me... and anyone saying he should be able to just randomly have an extra hard drive lying about to transfer stuff onto, come on, not everyone has that facility

well, depending on his file system, he may be able to still recover many of his files. Try running an undelete program and see if that brings anything up; if not, then you'd have to spend some serious cash on a professional recovery solution to get anything back.

Most of the systems i work on for people only have 1-5gb of data they need to keep. The rest is program/os data or replacable files.

People drive uninsured cars everyday, just like they don't protect their systems from HD failures, or they don't protect themselves having sex...

I don't think anyone is trying to make him feel bad. Saying it maybe will prevent him or someone else reading it from having the same thing happen again.

okay, I guess I have to go into detail and re-explain things.

I formatted my hard drive. I didn't do "quick format" I did the "Format for eight hours" format. Everything is gone. I've accepted that everything is gone. I don't have an extra computer lying around that would have let me back things up after the system borked.

Everything is gone. Total. No return.

I fixed the scroll problem, which is about the best thing that's happened to me in the last week.

I really don't know why I told you guys all this as the majority of you were as helpful as lips on a woodpecker. Not that it's your fault that this happened, it's just hard to find solice in your lost stuff through people telling you what you should have done four days ago before your brother played GTAIII and bluescreened the fucking thing, somehow erasing enough of your windows file where you couldn't enter Safe-mode, couldn't re-install over the old system, basically couldn't do any of the things you wanted (or needed) to do. I couldn't even back anything up onto the few floppy disks I have because the "rescue" CD wouldn't even let me copy my old files to removable media through the command prompt (which I could only get through the "rescue" CD.

So are there any more comments that can explain to me what I should have done when there's nothing I can do about it now? If so, I don't want to hear them. At all. Keep them to yourself and maybe someday if someone has a premonitory dream about pretty much losing all thier shit in about ten minutes you can tell them before it's too late.

Someone loses their stuff and all you can do is try and inflate your egoes?

Did you ever think that someone who knows how to format a computer and reinstall windows might not be a moron?

Why did you tell everyone.. Are you looking for pity??

Anyone who does a *Reformat* should automatically understand that the HDD is wiped clean..That's why they call it a Reformat/Clean Install..??

It really does suck, especially when it happens 1. in your absence amd 2. before you have any chance to back up the data.

did you try safemode first? sometimes that gets around the blue screen, as does leaving it at the blue screen and calling microsoft tech support to see if teres anything to do about it. My dad's friend screwed his pc up the other day and I had to boot into xp setup, go to the recovery thing, run chkdsk and it was fixed.

He said safemode didn't work either.

Maybe trying the hard drive in another computer would have worked? But meh no point now.

I think you can still get data off a full-formatted drive but you need one of these huge deep scanning tunneling something machines that fill up rooms.
