SSJ4...

I know you're into coins, and I thought you (and any other coin enthusiasts here) might find this interesting... and maybe be able to tell me what it is. :P When I got lunch at Subway yesterday, I found this in the change that I got back.

I found this interesting.

Even as a not-a-coin-collector, those ones you picked up do look pretty cool.

Who is the milkman? What is the purpose of the goggles?

Neat. It's a Greek 10 Drachma coin.

Quote:
The name drachma is derived from the verb "δράττω" (dratto, "to grasp"). Initially a drachma was a fistful (a "grasp") of six oboloi (metal sticks), which were used as a form of currency as early as 1100 BC. It was the standard unit of silver coinage at most ancient Greek mints, and the name 'obol' was used to describe a coin that was one-sixth of a drachma.
Greece uses the Euro now, so that Drachma is defunct in Greece.

I don't have any Drachmas, but I do have an ancient Greek Stater, circa 375 BC:

Quote:
The stater was an ancient coin of Greek or Lydian origin which circulated from about 700 BCE to 50 CE. It was also heavily used by Celtic tribes.

Original mintings of this coin such as practiced in Athens valued the stater at a tetradrachm (4 drachms), though issues at other places or times applied the word "stater" to a didrachm (2 drachm) coin.

There also existed a "gold stater", but it was only minted in some places, and was mainly an accounting unit worth 20-28 drachms depending on place and time, the Athenian unit being worth 20 drachms.
I only ever get the odd Canadian coin in change, and that ain't happened in a while.

plain old wheat cents that have, for whatever reason, had stars cut in them. Worthless.

Perhaps used to make molds in dough.

What a great move that was.

When I was doing continental trucking I used to keep half a dozen jars in the cab that all the loose change from the various countries went in. You can only change notes at the borders so it builds up after a while and you've always got enough for a cup of coffe or whatever if you were just in transit.

When Europe went Euro I dumped the whole lot in one of those charity machines.

This coin stacking site has been wasting a lot of office time lately:

*sigh*

I find it sad when people don't know their own country's money, yet alone police officers and a BANK not knowing our money. And to beat that, the US Secret Service getting involved.

They're talking about these, which are 100% spendable:

Imagine the uproar if the kid had spend a $2 bill. The police would've probably locked the kid up.
