SHOUTcast Source Protocol

Can anyone tell me what protocol is used by the SHOUTcast Source DSP plugin when "Sound card Input" is fed to the DNAS? I.e., is the signal converted to MP3 before going out over the server? Is the signal actually processed (sampled?) by the sound card, or does it bypass the sound card like USB audio? You can tell from my question that I don't understand this stuff.
