Google Chrome OS

It looks like Google is developing a new OS for netbooks. It's supposed to run on ARM processors as well as the x86 platform. That sounds like some promising news for getting some cheap capable browsing power.

Google Chrome OS will be released in mid 2010. And because it is open source, just like Android, developers will be able to get to work on new apps right away. Plus if there are any problems in the future, anyone will be able to work on a solution. But can Google beat Microsoft with its new Google Chrome software? It won't be easy.

Given the poor performance and stability of Windows on netbooks I don't think it would be very hard.

One other thing that might factor in is the purchase of ON2 technologies by Google. They may open source ON2 codecs and at least they will be able protect the Theora codec from claims by submarine patent claimants.

One problem will be the availability of open source video chipsets due to the problems with maintaining the secrecy needed for secure media path display. This will also be a problem with linux.

It will also be a problem starting next year with current computers having BD drives if your video card, OS and monitor aren't compliant with the DRM crap.

Google's brand name will help them to fight Microsoft, but unless they cloud computing gives people a specific reason to leave, I don't think Windows will lose too many customers.

Despite the bugs, you know you've got support. Google has been lest than stellar at supporting its clients.... simply because it has a lot of free products.

Sometimes that support is "yep. it's a bug alright."
