There aren't really many things as fast and solid as Napster, but I think Gnutella is the best IMHO. You are allowed to exchange anything, and it can't be shut down.

As far as I see it, Napster's got the fan-base. It's really hard to say if there's really anything that can compete with it. The technology for other clients are out there, but not the amount of users does not come close to Napster's popularity. It's going to be interesting what happens if and when Napster gets shut down where people will go after.

IRC is the only way to get mp3s.

I've shared MP3's over ICQ before. I'm too lazy to find an IRC chatroom that exchanges MP3s, but I could probably do it if I really had to. IRC is the bomb, I just don't use it much.
Anybody know of any good freeware IRC clients? ------------------ Mister Bill ICQ#71042786 |

I've tried a lot since Scour Exchange shut down. Only Napster really works, Gnutella freezes every time I open it.

Also, my personal absolute favorite way to get MP3's is via FTP. I have an FTP up and running, it's just not that good cuz I can only upload at about 20Kbps max.

*Note to self: Mirc is freeware....
And I thought it was shareware.... maybe it changed to freeware in version 5.81. Who knows. But anywayz. Anyone who hasn't heard of open napster should really consider looking into it. Ok, so i use a few programs as a back-up to napster. 1) Napigator. Of course u cant get downloads, just a server list... but these servers aren't under the influence of big business (not really). These are servers run by whoever. 2.) MyNapster. It's a kewl client. uses irc chat.... allows connections to several servers at once. trade anything you want... bandwidth utilization graph... etc. When napster finally bans me, or shuts down, I know im gonna switch to this baby (TheFamilyRoom on Bravo Server Rocks!) ![]() 3.)Newtella. My favorite mp3 trading gnutella client. trades only mp3. simple interface (to me atleast). whatever... 4.)Gnotella. kewl gnutella clone. Too bad the developers haven't released an update in a while... trades everything tho. Thats all i use i think. o well here are the links... http://gnotella.nerdherd.net http://www.mynapster.comhttp://www.napigator.com http://www.newtella.net [This message has been edited by AlieXai (edited December 02, 2000).] |

Napster doesn't have resume, Scour is down, and iMesh I can't connect to - the only option for resume I have is CuteMX ( www.cutemx.com ), but nobody's on it, therefore I can't find Orgy's "Fiction" video (All I get is 8 matches, mostly porn. "Never heard of the registry crack for Napster bans? Jeez..."
Thanks for the piece of info ReDVsion... but u dont realize that i was one of the first people to offer a napster unban registry patch... Dont you feel ... nevermind. But anywayz, I have a static ip. They could ban my ip (DUH!). And if they do so, im gonna take no efforts to get my ip changed (not gonna masquerade either, or go via proxy), and i will make no efforts to use napster again. So I repeat: When napster finally bans me, or shuts down, I know im gonna switch to this baby. |

for gnutella, they probably just banned port 6346. (Thats gnutella's default listening port, etc.) I'm sure u can find some servers that dont use the port 6346, and the rest of the common ports used by gnutella. But maybe they did ban the protocal (if that possible, i ought to check that out....i admit, i dont know too much about firewalls and the like.)
As for napster, if they can ban protocals, then they probly got u fucked. But i think they just blocked its default port too. Try some other napster client, or use napigator to get napster to try to connect to another opennap server. I'm sure the admins have probably thought of this, and u've probably tried this but o well. just trying to help. |

There should be a program for colleges with zipped mp3 files, so nobody would recognize the extentions. but then they could get a packet sniffer, but oh well...

There is only one file sharer for me - Audiogalaxy. Being a modem user, Napster and most of the rest are horrid - time outs and disconnections all the time.
But with AG, I always get the song I add with no re-tries, as it downloads the same user from more than user at once. It is really easy to find a file as well - it lists song names, not file names. Also, as the searching is web-based, I can add songs to download from other computers. Anyway, it is brill - and I would recommend it to anyone. Give it a go - www.audiogalaxy.com |
