Depeche Mode
Depeche Mode anyone?
I'll start by listing my favourite tracks: See You Just Can't Get Enough Master & Servant Leave in Silence Get the Balance Right Shake the Disease Everything Counts World in My Eyes Enjoy the Silence Did anyone like Exciter? For me it's the equivalent of The Cure/Bloodflowers. Middle of the road stuff, a band losing the fire. |

Funny, I've just been "gathering" that album over the last couple of days, some of it is ok, some of it is dire As for DM memories, ahhh, where to start.... Saw them play the last night of the Violator world tour back in '91 was it? Albums?, Violator without a shadow, I have the dubious honour of owning 3 copies of this, original tape version for my old walkman, then shortly after that I purchased a vinyl copy of it, nothing sounds as good as vinyl and a few years later when joining the digital ranks my CD copy arrived. SOFAD, Enjoyed some of it, didn't care for other bits of it. Ultra, fairly good all the way along, let down by the fact that Dave was probably going cold turkey at this time so his input is not as much as you would expect. Exciter, I actually liked exciter, no matter what people say. I wasn't really into DM before the 90's phase of their output, although I was aware of them and probably knew all their stuff, it was just something I never bought, did have a bootleg of Music for the masses, didn't care much for that, did have 101 and did enjoy that, again, an album I've only recently replaced with a digital copy. Singles wise, It's called a heart from the late 80's was a personal fave, Enjoy the silence & Policy of truth from the 90's, especially some of the Francois K mixes. From the later years,oh I forget the name, the one that was released to promote the greatest hits, shit what was it called now........, err moving on, Freelove, I adored this single, was the first track I got off exciter, and probably the last track I ever downloaded off napster, hmmmm, yes, Freelove inspired a great deal of artwork output from me during 2001, great track, check out the DJ Muggs mix if you can find it anywhere, it's nothing short of gobsmacking. Fave non single tracks, Blue Dress off Violater, Mercy In You from SOFAD, Jazz Thieves off Ultra, gah, I could go on all day. Other memories, turns out the current Mrs Jones was also at the same final night DM concert as I was , when she moved in we were going through her stuff and out drops this Violater tour program, "oh I say, you went there as well", "yes, the final night" comes the reply, ohhh spooky, predestiny or something there...... By the way, 101 has just come out on DVD for the first time I read somewhere, including a bonus DVD of "nearly" all the rosebowl concert, I say nearly as they don't think the whole gig was filmed at the time, I think it came out on the 20th of October over here. Memories, memories.... |

I had a huge DM period, about 7 or 8 years ago, during which I sometimes listened to them more than The Cure
![]() My fave records were undoubtedly 101 and Violator. In retrospect, I think the band had a golden era (from Some Great Reward to Violator included) which is now the only one I would care about. The first albums were really too weak ("A Broken Frame") or tried too hard to be innovative (honestly, has anyone ever been able to stand "Pipeline" ?), then with Some Great Reward, they became good ![]() |

Depeche Mode is awesome. I have most of their Greatest Hits albums. My absolute favorite is Policy of Truth. Wooo, I just love the live performances too.

Policy of Truth is a nice track. For me, Depeche Mode were the band that took electronica to the stadium (gave it legs so to speak). The fact they made several crap albums and videos is neither here nor there.

But look at the Violator videos - possibly the cheapest of all time (all you need is a field, a cheap costume and a papier-mache throne). Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. This is the album that netted gazillions!! Someone at Mute is a shrewd businessman.

zoot, if you'd like to try some more of DM, see if your friend has 101, it's the live album from the concert tour. Possibly one of the best live albums out there
