I hate doctors....

Ok - so had a little accident on Saturday night, and after 12 hours of pain decided to get my leg checked out.

17:00 - entered A&E dept.

21:00 - still waiting in A&E with a suspected broken leg.

21:30 - Get X-Rays that confirm that my fibula has a split in it, probably something to do with me dropping 174lb of me onto a square inch area of my leg.

21:40 - Was checked over by a non-english speaking doctor that eventually managed to convey that because the bone was split, and because my leg was so swollen, that there was no point in putting on a cast. He also informed me that they had no free crutches, but my leg *should* hold my weight. (see below)

After all that, the only thing I got for a broken leg was a pat on the back and a prescription for anti-inflammatories......

working fine so long as you don't need that cat scan NOW
can you wait a year or so?

normally i'm all for health care (you've seen my reasons before, parents would have had to choose b/w my meds and food for my family, that sort of stuff) but in some cases it just pisses the hell out of me

my brother very nearly sliced his finger off a month or so back, and he didn't get looked at by a doctor until he collapsed on the emergency room floor

Yeah, it's pretty easy to find a non-english speaking doctor here - it's pretty much all you can find. Go into any hospital here and most of the doctors are asian. I have no problem with that - I do have a problem with the fact that they neglected to learn the language before they got here. In a profession where the need to communicate, and to understand is paramount, I think it's nothing short of neglect.

Was out on saturday night, had a few pints ane was walking a friend of mine home when I jumped a set of railings on the way home. Unfortunately I neglected to notice the old set of railings inside the new ones, and basically sent 174lb of me down on top of a square inch of my leg.

Didn't even notice until I got home that it was broken (picture Mike standing on broken leg saying to others "Seeeeee - it's not broken - if it was I wouldn't be able to do this... <dances from foot to foot>...now where's that beer???"

<Update> My leg now has pretty much turned a nice shade of dark purple from the knee down, and has a bulge the size of a grapefruit. I think I'll be returning to that doctor, if only to strangle the bastard.

I intend to on Monday morning when the college health centre opens. Until then I'll be numbing the pain with alcohol and the lovin' of any sympathetic cute 18-25 year old that happens to be around.

I was told that crutches have great pulling power - that every girl in the vicinity would be going "awww... you poor guy...here, let me help you..."

Bollocks.

The nearest I got to the scenario above was getting shoved down a flight of stairs by some pissed nurse the last night I was out.

Yeah, put up with two hours of "so, are you coming out on the dancefloor??? <hehehehheeee>"

Could picture myself throwing the crutch across the dancefloor, "Last of the Mohicans" style, and listening for the squelch as it embedded itself in the back of her head......

Oh me God!

Absolutely terrible man, I can relate. That's a bad break you got there, and hope a speedy, painless recovery with no side-effects and a perfectly healed leg-bone!

I can relate because one day, I helped some family members move a piece of furniture. Although I didn't break anything, I developed an incredibly painful spinal injury that, for the most part, only pressed on all the nerves that generated pain but left no permanent. First I broke out in a sweat, then my lower back's ability to support my weight gave way, and I fell smack dead on my head, in front of wife and my Mom and Dad. Then the pain really kicked it up a notch and I ended up screaming at the top of my lungs for four hours, and begging everyone around around me to either knock me out with a good cuff on the jaw, or else, kill me as soon as possible because I was going insane from the pain (completely true story btw). The ambulance came, everyone was scared shitless because they thought I was a goner due to the screaming and sweating. Got the hospital ER and that was a big mistake. Doctor told me to "bite the bullet", there was nothing he or anyone else can do because the X-Rays couldn't confirm any physically evident damage. I told the doc between drools and ranting that it was most probably a hidden pinched nerve, the never that gives pain The idiot agreed with me. I then told him to shoot me up with Morphine, or, a more modern pain killers that will stop the agony. Doctor said "it might make you stop breathing so we can't do anything. I told Doctor that it would be okay if I would stop breathing because being dead was better than being a screaming meemy.

I ended up laid out on my bed for three weeks, and then I woke up one morning, everything was totally better Thank Gd.

Anyway, I hope you're better, and getting better treatment.

Regards,
Painful Sympathizer

heh - spent 6 more hours today in the A&E here in Galway. Apparently my so called doctor last week missed the minor detail that I also burst the artery in my leg - the swelling there is the empty space filling up with blood!! And I damaged the ligaments in my ankle...

Fun, fun, fun......

The upside is I had a very cute student doctor-ette look me over today. Convinced her to meet me after work tomorrow. Now that's what I call making the best of a bad situation

the worst i ever did was to roll my ankle over so far that, for the moment i did it, i distinctly remember looking down on my foot and seeing the tread on the bottom of my shoe. when i went to the hospital, the were very nice, and i was dealt with immediatly, found out i had only severly sprained my ankle, not broken it, and was out the door with an excuse to miss the next week of school in 45 min. the hard part was convincing my parents that i was actually hurt. they didn't believe me that i need to go to the hospital until i physically fell down trying to get out of bed the day after i rolled my ankle.
