Neon Genesis Evangelion

Anyone else here watch all of it?
I understand it now. Not everything completely, but a heck of a lot more than I did before.
(I got the Platinum Edition and watched the whole show twice over spring break, and then read quite a bit on the animenation forums)
It seems like for every question you answer, 10 new ones open up, but I feel like now I have a much better sense of what's actually happening, so watching it feels a lot less like abstract art than it did the first time.
It's like 2001: A Space Odyssey; the first time you watch it, it makes no sense whatsoever, but after watching it a few times you get a sense of the thematic parallels, and reading the book makes it all make a sort of concrete sense.
Even though the "why" might not be totally clear, at least the "what the heck just happened" is pretty clear. Mostly.

I thought it made sense right away, but that may be because when I watched it I was also just reading A Thousand Plateaus and interpreted Evangelion along the lines of the ideas in that book.

Hmm, I don't know much about that book. Psychology? I agree that Evangelion makes more sense from a psychological perspective than from a representative perspective, that's for sure. Legend has it that Anno(the director) had just gotten out of therapy for extreme depression, and used the themes he learned there in the show. Which makes sense, considering pretty much every Psych Disorder I know of is represented.

EVA stands out to me as the only universe where one is likely to get blessed to death by an Angel in orbit.

...I mean, that makes sense, right?

LOL, blessed to death. That was a pretty comical choice of music.

"Dude, get out that lance thing."

--"The Lance Of Longinus? Didn't it get stuck on the roof last time?"

"Yeah, but seriously--that thing's not going away. Get the lance. I mean, we've got an angel up there. IN ORBIT."

--"Okay, but if it gets stuck on the roof again, I'm not going after it. And what does it DO, anyway? I mean, it's a stick. We've got laser cannons down here."

"It's histo-religiously symbolic. So trust me, it'll work. But it'll be unrecoverable, so it'll only work in this episode. Just like we planned."

--"But really, why did the Angel bring choir music on a boombox, and a spotlight? Should we really be afraid of an enemy with those tactics?"

"Scares the heck out of me. Dude, get the lance before it turns the volume up. Or runs out of angel-batteries or something. Who knows what else it brought."

Heh. Really, if you look at a lot of the angel "attacks," very few of them were very agressive. Some acted in self-defense, and some caused damage just by the fact that they were huge and walking around, but very few of them went out of their way to mess with anybody who didn't mess with them first.
That particular angel doesn't even seem to move. It's just chillin' up there, even after it... illuminates Asuka.

Haven;t got round to that one yet. Out of all the animu I've seen though, I still think Trigun is the best.

I haven't gotten around to watching EVA yet, though I've seen a few clones, like Rah-Xephon. I suppose I'll have to watch it eventually as it's a 'classic' My wife said it's not that great though.

The show got terrible at the end, it just used clips from old episodes.

The movie was OK, though.

I don't know...While I enjoy Evangelion, I've always been attracted to RahXephon more...Series doesn't focus so much on the battles and the plot's a little less confusing too...Ayato's a cool protagonist too; Shinji just makes me wanna go emo...

At the same time, I peak Evangelion about half-way into the series; I find it absolutly awsome from that point forward... Ironically, that's kind of why I lost interest the first time I wanted it, and now that NGE is aired on AS now, I've allowed myself to follow through...I think AS is up to about Episode 21, so I'm pretty capitvated at this point...

On top of that, it doesn't even answer half the questions it presents you! God, I forgot how much I loved that series since a few years back...

Afterthought: Evangelion proves one thing I always tell people; You can never trust the UN to get anything done right...

that's just dumb, oh well at least they didn't put unit 01's head on the handle bars or something.

after finishing the series I've been told by my wife that I need to see the movies. I liked the story that they're trying to tell but The last two episodes sucked.

Well, see, it's actually being developed as a marketable (to average people) product, not as an enthusiast's artifact.

Although I'm sure production will be limited anyway, so it probably won't exactly be widely available regardless.

You can find music on the internets

I'm not gonna post a link, but look for a site called Galbadia Hotel. It has anime music.

On the topic of Eva, there's a trailer for the first new movie coming out. Looks like it's just a retelling of the first 6ish episodes, but the animation looks good.

Speaking of newly added details, check this commercial out:

http://jp.youtube.com/watch?v=ti7EKJX_jvs

Some of the new animation looks really nice. Also, at the very end of the trailer there's a glimpse of Kaworu, which is interesting because he didn't show up until the very end of the series, and this movie only represents the early part of the show, so... there's definitely some new story going in.
