the five best:
(1)Farewell my Concubine 1993 Hong Kong
(2)Windstruck 2004 Korea
(3)As Tears Go By 1988 Hong Kong
(4)Infernal Affairs 2002 Hong Kong
(5)12 Monkeys 1995

Other films I like, A Better Tomorrow 1986 Hong Kong, Moon Child 2003 Japan, My Sassy Girl 2001 Korea, some of the Japanese Zero Woman series, Wong Kar-Wai, and John Woo films.

Brad Pitt plays that demented character perfectly in 12 Monkeys, great! Anyone else who likes John Woo films, I would suggest the Japanese film Moon Child, lots of gun fights, and a good story/characters.

Your best are absolutely terrible, I'm sorry, but they really, really, really are. The only one watchable is Austin POwers 1.

And Pirates...is pretty fuckin awesome.

My personal fav's:

Big Lebowski
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Waiting
Clerks II
Cool Hand Luke

I'll go for (in different genres...)
LOTR (I'm counting 1, 2 & 3 as one choice;-)
Betty Blue (32º le Matin) - my introduction to any type of non-english cinema
Saving Private Ryan - ground breaking camera work
The Vanishing - not the hollywood remake, oh gods no!
The Usual Suspects - it was either this or Memento, or LA Confidential, or Goodfellas... oh dammit, 5 just isn't enough

Well, difficult question, because there are so many genres.

I will therefore try to split this list on genres:

Best War/Action Movie
a. active action: The Seven Samurai
b. passive, BUT on a higher intellectual level:
Kurosawa's Ran

Sci-Fi
a. with special effects: 2001, A Space Odyssey
b. on an intellectual level: Solyaris
followed closely by Stalker

Comedy
Monty Python's Life of Brian and The Holy Grail
This is the quintessence of comedy and I find them both unsurpassed.

Common Movies
Metropolis (1927) (some Sci-Fi elements, too, but not really a Sci-Fi movie; still to see a Hollywood movie come close to it)

Metropolis (1927)

Get the real authorized remaster, not any public domain versions you might find. Very cool. FYI. This movie is no longer in the public domain. It is a restored foreign work under 1998 GATT and a Notice of Intent to Enforce has been filed with the copyright office.

I'm not really big on silent films, but this one is an exception.

If you liked Metropolis, you might like this one:

1) The Third Man (the quintessential film noir)

2) Notorious (Hitchcock's best! Suspenseful & charming)

3) The Maltese Falcon (Bogart is brilliant, the story- blisteringly paced)

4) Some Like It Hot (Watch this on the big screen with a packed theater and you'll know what I mean)

5) City Lights (Is there a more touching moment in film than when the blind flower lady realizes Chaplin's Tramp is the kind, rich man?)
These all are the good movies. But I did not like City Lights and The Maltese Falcon. These two movies are boring....
