Basically I'm trying to run winamp thru mirc using DDE.
Also, I need to learn to put everything in the msg before I post it..

ojms: I don't work for Nullsoft, I don't think I'm old enough, I have like, no skills in HTML or C++. Nor do I think they need me, I'd like to though.

Rygir: Ok, you can have Winamp register NONE of the files, and register each filetype yourself setting a icon for whatever you want using the method I stated.

BTW, SDK = System Developer Kit (I think) basically it's example source code on vatious componets, of for example, Winamp, and documentation on how to make whatever you want to write interact with it.

Why does winamp.com post so many "rips" or stolen skins? Who moderates the skins that are posted? I know you guys are busy, but jeez, right now you have at least 4 versions of Spyamp (originally done by Mike Cao) and none give credit to the original author. 2 of them are called Genoa or Gen amp. There is also a rip of Topaz amp. Same name, different "artist". Man, I'm getting madder as I think about it. Every time I visit there's a new ripoff, usually in the "Best Skins" category. Your player may be free, and it may be the best (maybe), but your site moderation sucks, and that alone is enough to switch me to Sonique.

It stands for Software Development Kit. It's basically a rundown of all the neat user-configurable doohickeys that you can futz around with to make winamp do some funky shiznat.

ah, the .plan is back

and yes, both of hooverphonic's albums are very good. blue wonder power milk has a lot more strings (and a different, but similar, singer) than a new sterophonic sound spectacular. i dig it.

they have a new one coming out sometime soon. (august last i checked)

looking forward to 3

Hi Justin ,
I am running a Shoutcast station thru Winamp.
Is there a maximum # of playlist entries , or an overall quantity of megs/time that Winamp can handle in it's playlist ? Or is it infinite , or as big as the hard drive in my machine.
MANY thanks for your excellent product!:cool and your time taken to respond to this)
Sincerely, 888

I've always regarded Winamp as one of the finest projects ever done. I'm curious as to what prompted you to become a coder and where you gained/honed your skills. Thanks for a great product and I'm eager to see what you have in store for us with 3.0

Justin, I've used Winamp since 1.04 (My gawd, Winplay sucked) and I have dutifully upgraded every time a newer version came out. In the past, oh, six months, it seems the rate of Winamp evolution has dropped off dramatically. Has Winamp nowhere else to go, are you waiting until v3, are you trying to come up with features better than the minibrowser, or what? What I'm asking is, are you working on Winamp with the same drive you once did, or has the pot of gold at the end of aolbow stolen your motivation?

Begin speculation:
Actually, they're developing CIA software for hypnotizing Russians with [-[Even Trippier Rotozooming Visual Fx(tm)]-].
Nyah. It takes a long time for 'em to develop new major revisions -- and make it work well enough to please the masses! Reckon! Exactly like d.net's v3 clients!

Besides, writing software is like cooking a roast. I don't know how, but it is.

Justin,

1. Did you eat all the Cracklin' Oat Bran?

2. Will Winamp 3 feature some added functionality regarding playlists, similar to what is seen in Media Player 7?

Peace.

I remember a long time ago, when Winamp was running out of 1.9x numbers to use and the new features of Winamp 2.x were being talked about, one of the things mentioned were moveable buttons, but that never happened...

I was wondering, will 3.x have the ability to place a button where ever a designer would like? I was thinking it would kind of be like the transparency masking, or more like image mapping for a web site...

You first define a square/rectangular image size to define the overall size of the player interface. Then you define the transparencies to make a circle, or an odd shape. Then you could define locations or "hot spots" that are clickable. Even alternate images to display in that location when clicked ti "animate" the depression of a button or a lever or whatever. You'd want a few other pre-defined objects like the visualization window which would have to be a certain size, or a fixed ratio at least, and there would be have to be a "title display" object, and a that sort of thing...

You know what I'm saying here?

This way people could make the play/stop buttons on the top, or vertical, or all over the place... Or have really tiny interfaces, or really big ones... Even have a photo of a person at the Winamp interface. They'd just have to map the controls to logical places (?).

It would also be nice if we could specify a font to use instead of making images for the letters and numbers...

This would evolve your skin library to an interface library... I think the skinning community would take to this idea very well. Is it possible or perhaps likely?

Will skins from v2 be compatible with v3 or will it be a big change?

Also, I'm non to happy with the review of my last game skin JillAmp which got a mesly 2 stars shunting it to the lower depths of the game catagory!
Review page: http://www.winamp.com/customize/deta...ponentId=12676
Most of my skins have at least got 4 stars and I personnally think that this one was my best. The reviewers comments where not very clear on why it got such a low mark either, there is nothing wrong with the equaliser as far as I can see.

I'm a bit confused at some of the reviews of skins. There alot of 5 star skins that are really crap lookin poping up recently (especially in the game section). I hate to think how bad some of the good skins where rated! And I've noticed alot of rip offs apearing aswell, especially total copies of equalisers and playlists from some skins!

/me stops rambling

Hey Justin (And everyone else). I was just wondering, what MP3 encoder do you use? Also what would you say is the best FREE encoder? I don't want to shell out $20 just so I can make a couple MP3s. Perhaps you should add a encoder to Winamp in the next version (See my post in "Your Winamp Wishlist"). Anyways, love Winamp, especially the AVS. Keep it coming!

I remember back in the day you had a build of Winamp that had a splash screen that featured a pack of Camel cigarettes (but with a llama not a camel, of course)

Had I imagined this? Nobody seems to remember it.

(if it did exist how would I go about obtaining the particular build? It was really really neat.)

A SDK is a software development kit, ie the (usually) .h and .lib files you need to be able to use the "software".

My question is: why don't you allow longer song/artist/album names in the ID3 tags? MusicMatch 4.0, for example, does. But if I
save a tag with it, and after open it with WinAmp, the names are quite mixed. Is there anything to do about that?

Hey Justin,
What's happening with the wonderful gnutella? I heard it was in closed beta testing, but I've also heard that AOL has forced you to stop development. What's happening with the whole thing and will we ever see a 1.0 release with source code? Thanks!

Can you check out my MP3 station and tell me how it sounds?
http://www.mp3.com/stations/new_techno_club/

One thing that annoys me when playing a station with winamp is that winamp pops up and needs to be clicked on every time a new song comes up.

Peace,

Hi Justin,
First, THANKS to your great work that you and others do.

I have a question that I didn't see posted yet. :-)

Is there an option or plug-in for Winamp that works like a noice killer? A sort of Dolby? Music that contains some noice and is compressed to an Mp3 file, is always, at the low volume parts having a kind of wisling.
Is there a way that this is filtered out?
By that you can always hear that it is an Mp3 file wich you are listening to.

If it does not exists, maybe it is nice to implement it in the next Winamp.

generating tones could be done by following these steps:

* rightclick the eject button
* choose 'open location' from the popup menu
* enter 'tone://[frequency]' in which [frequency] is the tone frequency (duh)

the only problem is: this feature has been disabled, it won't work anymore...

Spanky, you are not hallucinating. I too have seen this and in fact may still have this build around. I'm not 100% sure what version it was or even if it was an officially released build, but I did see it if that puts your mind at rest. I'll keep an eye out and post here again if I see it.
