RIAA representatives, these members say, have argued that there is no need for tomorrow's CDs to play on today's machines if that's what it takes to thwart illegal copying.

Damn the RIAA.

They can do such outrageous things because they're controlling every aspect of the music supply chain -- recording studios, media technology, manufacturing, logistics, distribution, retail outlets.

Nothing short of a Microsoft-like break-up of this giant oligopoly can free the customers and artists, on the two opposite ends of the supply chain, from their stranglehold.

That's a complete bluff on their part. In negotiating, you call that a "dead fish proposal" - in other words you lay down an unreasonable proposal table so repugnant (hence the dead fish part) that it scares people into accepting your terms.

They simply could not get away with that in todays music business climate without offering a completely shattering paradigm shift in format. The music buying public has too much of an agravated mood as it is- that would incite open rebellion.

Plus, halting CD production would cause the respective stocks to plunge even more than they are down already- they can't afford to do so.

I am not amused by that at all... that statement is a big lie and they know it. Don't be scared for a second...

Now is the time for all good Americans to come to the aid of their Country

The recording Industry can do what it wants to do. I don't care. But they lack the forsight and don't know what the consumer wants. Yeah, the singer's need to earn a living, the recording Industry needs to make money, but the consumers can't afford that kind of price. I don't buy pirated goods or Napster kind of copying from Com to Com. But most of my friends buy it and download it. I understand their hardship. Buying a original CD(BMG,Sony...etc) from my country will burn a big hole in everyone's pocket. For a pirated one, it will save them lots of money. Recently, the recording Industry in my country just posted a 75% downturn which mean it is going to turn all local singers into beggers or turn them into others jobs. This is because almost everyone in my country is buying pirated goods. The recording company's just did a campaign title "Save the Recording Industry" and "Stop buying pirated goods". But the end result is just the same, IN VAIN. I will list out the price of CD's and VCD's in my country's currency and the pirated one's.

Original CD's VCD's : RM25 - RM45
Pirated CD's VCD's : RM4 - RM10

Notice the VAST difference?
So, if the recording industry wants to do anything that is going to make them poorer than they already are, I say go ahead. Without music without movies what is the difference? During ancient time, there is no music or movies, so without it, I think a few of us can survive. The rest, god bless them.

They use radioactive men as currency in your country? wow, that's uh... weird.
Anyway, I'm not gonna buy a new stereo or cd player just because the stupid RIAA said so. When i'm not able to play cd's on my cd player i'm gonna want my money back, or else it's molotov cocktail time!

no one is going to shell out $200+ for new equipment, just so some people can't pirate. remember: if it has a hard form, it can be pirated.

they said dvds were pirate proof. we know that isn't true.

even IF they could pull off a new media with a new type of player, it would be pirateable. i promise.

I'd like to meet a mad man who makes it all seem sane

yeah, it'll be free, but then it will be stopped, it's an endless cycle which is going to leave many many ppl w/ a lot less money (i'm not talking about hte record industry i'm talking about normal, nontechsmart, like me, consumers)
then again, i'll just rely on my friends and brother to help me figure it out

At the end of the day, the losing side is from both side of the battle ground. It is a lose-lose situation. Sigh.

Molotovs don't usually contain vodka. They do, however, contain gasoline and motor oil. Mmm, tasty
