I don't think I have ever seen a drive that fragmented before.

I retract my claim in the "NTFS vs FAT32" thread that NTFS makes any effort at all to resist fragmentation.

Oh no no no... NTFS makes an effort, it's just that I don't. That drive is used solely for storage (note the relatively small system file section), so I have a couple of files that are several hundred megs big. When these files get moved around, severe fragmentation happens (there's simply no spot on the drive large enough to put the whole thing, so it gets split up). The problem gets worse if you forget to defrag for several months, like me.

That thing was a bitch to defrag. Especially because the drive was so fragmented that there weren't enough free spaces left to defrag. So, I had to move some files to C: to make space. It took me all day, and I'm still working at it. I've backing up a couple of the larger files onto CD, and will delete them, so the struggle continues.

My harddrive is 4 gigs, and I once set it defragging at about 5:00.

It was still going at midnight.

Still no-one knows the original point of this poll. Why did you make a poll, RM?

I was defragging mine too one time, but it had been going since 8:00 in the morning and it was still only halfway there when I came back about 8:00 at night. So I restarted and haven't tried since.
