Sorting tagged mp3's by tracknumber in the playlist window
just a question:
i would to know the difference between choosing: "Misc" "Sort" by title or by filename or by path and filename for eg.: i have a folder with several TAGGED mp3's and i would like to have all of them in the playlist window ordered by track number, but if the filenames are for eg.: track names inside the folder are: intro music i like you love love love ... and ALL FILES ARE TAGGED WITH THE TRACKNUMBER FIELD, 1,2,3 etc. is this possible? thankx |

Sort by filename: SongA.mp3, SongB.mp3, etc...
Sort by Path and Filename: C:\Music\A\SongA.mp3, C:\Music\B\SongDelta.mp3 Neither sort by track unless they are specified in the title. | Brought to you by ^V ^C | The one... the original... no seriously! |

So this is still not possible in Winamp?
Sorting by track number is the default in most hardware media players and I'd think it was one of the obvious choices to sort files by. But no way to do it in the winamp playlist? ![]() |

If the songs are all properly tagged, then you could add files to the playlist via:
Media Library -> Local Media -> Audio view where all songs are already sorted by artist -> album -> track# But yeah, if you're loading files into the playlist via Windows Explorer then your files would need to be all named something like: artist\album\# - title.mp3 artist\album\artist - album - # - title.mp3 etc Then sort by path+filename would work. I think shaneh's ActiveWinamp plugin can sort by album + track number...? http://www.myplugins.info/activewinamp.htm Alternatively, change your Advanced Title Formatting string via: Winamp -> Prefs -> Titles -> ATF to something like... [%artist% - ][%album% - ][$num(%track%,2) - ][$if2(%title%,$filepart(%filename%))] Or if you need support for compilations (where e.g. Album Artist is set to Various Artists and Artist is set to TrackArtist), then try using my ATF string :-) [$if2(%albumartist%,%artist%) - ][%album% - ]['CD'$split(%disc%,/,0) - ][$num(%track%,2) - ]$IfStrNotEqual(%artist%,$if2(%albumartist%,%artist%),[%artist% - ])[$if2(%title%,$filepart(%filename%))][][$if($fileext(%filename%),' [ ',)][%year% | ][$fileext(%filename%) ][$if(%bitrate%, '|' ,)][%bitrate% 'kbps' ][$if($fileext(%filename%),']',)][ $repeat(* ,%rating%)] Note: For aesthetics, you might need to add a few extra spaces here and there. Or just click 'Quote' and copy & paste my ATF string from the quote (ie. without actually replying). Then use 'sort by title' |

Thanks, but that looks like too much work...
![]() I just wonder why this simple feature was never added to the playlist? I mean it's the obvious choice to sort files, it should maybe even be the default sorting. edit: Seems I was too hasty in saying "too much work". I only now really understood the part about title formatting and it works very well. I only need to adjust it a bit but it's exactly what I needed. Thanks a lot. ![]() Still, if any of the developers for some weird reason might read this thread. Please add an option to sort by track#. So this work-around isn't needed. Now is there a way to remove the title number from the playlist window?
I'm using [$num(%track%,2) - ][%artist% - ]... as ATF and now of course it shows two numbers in the playlist. Any way to prevent this? |

What do you mean by "two numbers"?
You mean like 01, 02, 03...10, 11, 12, etc? That's a bit of an odd ATF string to use... and it's not much use if you're loading more than one album. Even my first suggestion would be better (the simple ATF string). If you just want it to show Track# as 1,2,3...10,11,12 then replace [$num(%track%,2) - ] with just [%track% - ] Though then you might see it sort like 1,11,12,2,3,4,etc, heh. |

No, what I meant was that the playlist entry itself reads:
01 - artist - title Now Winamp adds another number which is the position in the playlist: 1. 01 - artist - title 2. 02 - artist - title and so on. I know in 99% of the cases this is needed but for this specific case it'd be nice not to have that playlist entry number added. That's what I'd like to have removed if possible. |

Hi there,
adding the track number to the ATF string and sorting the playlist by filename manually works fine. But, of course, it would be more comfortable if Winamp sorted the playlist automatically by title when loading multiple files. There is a corresponding option in the playlist preferences, which I activated. Unfortunately Winamp doesn't seem to care. When loading a compilation album (i.e. different track artists, but the SAME album artist and album name), WA keeps on sorting the files alphabetically by ARTIST. Is there a solution for this? You would make me really happy ![]() Best regards Irie |

What I forgot:
Only compilations are affected. These are correctly tagged, i.e. the tag "album artist" contains the value "Various". They are displayed as one album in the library. But whenever you double click them or enqueue them by right-click, they are sorted ALPHABETICALLY instead by track number. And the playlist preference "When loading multiple files, sort file by name" has no influence on this behaviour. |

In the bottom pane where the songs are listed, make sure you sort by Album Artist. This will make it enqueue by track number. If you have the simple album view, there is a "hidden" pane at the bottom. Move that up, sort by album artist and then move it back down and the problem is solved |

Yeehaa
WOW! It actually works
![]() ![]() ![]() I had the simple view and not seeing that pane prevented me from just trying it out. What a pity. Thank you so much!! Now I'll be able to fully enjoy the Winamp experience. Best regards Irie |

Just set global shortcut for Media Library (so you can access it as quickly as possible (I use ALTGR+L)) and you can then sort and filter songs there by any column you want.
It looks just like another playlist. The winamp playlist is just quick review of songs in queue and you should use it only for basic actions. For anything else there is WML and once you set few custom Smart Views, you won't ever want anything else. Trust me. And as for the sort by album artist, where did you find it? (I use classic skin) |
