winamp->preferences->file types

"show winamp in folder context menus in windows explorer"

when you install over an older version this option is always [re-]checked even if it was unchecked by the user from a previous version.

i doubt this is system dependent but enjoy:

Little bit of a strange bug here. Here are my specs:

Windows XP w/SP1 [all updates, too]
40 gig hard-drive
P4 2.4 ghz
512 ddr physical memory
DVD/CD-RW drive
Conexant AMC AUDIO
Radeon IGP 345M

Winamp 5 FINAL
v5.0 (x86) - Dec 14 2003

PS: -running on a laptop [HP ze5475ca]
-all hardware is running on latest hardware/firmware
-bios has been updated to 2003-10-16 revision [dont know if this even matters]

I hope no one picked up this bug up earlier, but I searched for about 10 minutes and couldn't find this "bug".

I'm using the modern skin and when both playlist and main window are put in stick-mode, then docked into the bottom-right hand corner of my screen...

...the playlist begins to act very weird. In the same docked [locked with the main window] if I were to open up my playlist and begin to scroll [this is with a mouse wheel] the main window jumps from the docked position and goes somewhere else.

Hope this visual interpretation helps...

BEFORE:

AFTER opening playlist and start scrolling:

This is a weird "bug" because the main windows jumps to different places each time the playlist is used.

Hope this gets fixed soon. If I am doing something wrong, could someone help me out? Thanks for the read.

When I try to move Winamp to the other taskbar it gets strange.

Media Library crashes

Winamp 5.0 Final Build:
Dec 14 2003
System specs (mobo, cpu, ram):
MSI 845PE Max2, Pentium 4 2.4Ghz, 1Gb RAM
OS, Including Service Packs:
Windows XP - SP1 incl. all updates
Video Card, Video Card Drivers :
MSI Ti 4200 128Mb
Sound Card, Sound Card Drivers:
Creative Live! Value
DirectX version:
9.0b

I've tried adding several, 500+ files, albums to my media library with the standard modern skin turned on. After doing this winamp hangs, and finally crashes.
Then I try to restart winamp, which works, and then I choose _any_ of the views in the media library, and it hangs all over again - and finally crashes.

I have assigned a shortcut key to the Winamp shortcut(This can be done in the file properties of the shortcut)

After Winamp is opened, and not the active window, i should be able to switch to Winamp by pressing the shortcut key.

When using classic skins this works fine, but when using modern skin the player doesn't show.

System specs:
P4 2.4ghz
Abit IS7
512MB RAM
Creative Geforce4 Ti4200 64mb
Win2000 Fully updated with all patches etc.

Windows refuse to remain NOT on the current desktop (when using a virtual desktop)

Win2k, SP4
Winamp5 (x86) - Dec 14, 2003

Using a virtual pager called 'JSPager' (http://hem.fyristorg.com/jspage/), and when I use a skin other than Classic, Winamp will force itself into the current desktop - but in a random place (playlist will show up in onw location, and the main console will show up in another). I got it to stop doing this, by setting "Compatibility mode" for window classes 'Winamp PE' and 'Winamp v1.x' (a setting in JS Pager).

The reason I'm reporting this, is this was NOT a problem in the Winamp5 BETA (or any other previous winamp version).

BTW, I'm unable to even switch to a Modern Skin now - I get an exception.

Thanks,

-Taner

[Edit --> DJ Egg]

If it's now too late to edit your own post,
please send me a PM (private message)
with the details of the Exception error,
so I can edit it into your report.
Your report is pretty much useless without this essential info.

Also include graphics card & driver version details
plus DirectX version.
Please also send the same complete report to the JSPager people.

Thank you

this has happened twice since I installed it. I left winamp running in winshade mode along the top of my screen. when I returned (hours later) there was an error message. Winamp has encountered an error...send error report..etc. (the monitor was sleeping..don't know if that matters.)

playlist mouse wheel scrolling

pre-reqs: user has mouse set to scroll in 'screen' increments.

info: winamp ignores the windows mouse scroll setting and scrolls by the preset value. this is normally not an issue, as it only requires a bit more wheel movement to get where you're going in the playlist.

issue: if the playlist is small enough that scrolling by one increment skips several entries in the list

result (and workaround): user must either use the scrollbar or expand the height of the playlist window.

note: having the playlist window the same size as the main window causes this, as the playlist window is small enough skip one complete entry per wheel increment.

if the integration with the windows mouse settings is too hard, please consider reducing the amount of wheel scroll by one line (so proper scrolling can occur where the playlist and main windows are the same height).

thanks for listening, and hope this helps improve winamp.

Couple of odd 'uns here...

I'm using the final release of Winamp 5 (as well... I suppose an upgrade from 2.91 -> rc8 -> rc666 -> final)

Specs AMD Athlon XP 2600+
256Mb RAM
MSI MS-6390 Motherboard (using on board graphics [S3 ProSavage DDR?] and sound [RealTek AC97?])

When I start a video thread, part of the Media Library 'blanks' and you have to scroll up and down to see it again. I thionk this only happens when you have the video window at Doublw size and next to (not on top of) the Media Library window)

Also, trying to read a CD of MP£s burned in a trial version of RealOne Player which plays fine in any other application (including WMP and Freeamp) and my (crappy) MP£ CD player, the three sessions on the disk just show up as 'Data Tracks' and not as a list of the tracks within each session, meaning I can't play them.

(If you need screenshots, they'll have to follow, sorry)

It's a bug I posted for the earlier RC versions, and still in the final one:

Ok, I have a simple bug, easy to reproduce, and probably easy to correct.

When I'm in the Media Library, and if I have two albums with the same name, but from different artists (it's the case when you have "Greatest Hits" albums), when you try to play them with "Play all files from Greatest Hits" it will play all of the "Greatest Hits" albums.

For exemple, I have
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Greatest Hits
Savage Garden - Greatest Hits

If I select a song from the Savage Garden album, and choose the option "Play all files from Greatest Hits", it will ADD BOTH OF THE ALBUMS to the playlist.

It happens with Classic/Modern skin, with and without 3rd party plugins.

Opacity to 100% on hover

the wonderful feature mentioned in the subject has a kind of bug, i think:
also if winamp isn't in the foreground or even minimized, the opacity changes when you come over the area of the screen where winamp is or would be if it wasn't minimized.

my system:
p4 2,3 ghz
512 mb ram
win xp home, no idea of sps
ati radeon 9500 pro, latest driver
some old creative soundcard, very old drivers which work best.
latest directx, so 9.0b i guess

Three things:

1. If you have an album title of the form "The '*", it shows up multiple times in the list of albums, once for each track. I noted this on an album entitled "The '92 vs '02 Collection". No longer a problem when renamed to "The 92 vs 02 Collection"

2. When an MP3 file has no album field, Winamp uses the name of the directory it's in, until edited using the Winamp tag editor (using Helium2 for external editing) This is annoying, would be better if it left that field blank.

3. Small issue - Now Playing in ML gives me a 404

WA5 with nView weirdness

When Winamp5 is used with nVidia's nView desktop management software a few issues come up.

One of which is that if you use the "send window to display x" nView command, you will end up with something like this...

This is a cropped version of a single screenshot, single instance of WA5 running, and playing. The player on the left is completely inactive, nothing on the player actually changes, however clicking the buttons will make it go next/prev etc.

The second such nView related problem is that while nView is running, the zxcvb keys will no longer work to control the winamp playing. If using the Modern skin and you select the play menu, N will go to next song and B will rewind by a few seconds. I can't seem to get any more keys to work.

System Specs:
Athlon XP 2000+ on Asus A7V333 motherboard
512mb DDR 266mhz RAM
Asus V8420 GeForce4 Ti 4200 w/ 128mb DDR RAM video card running the latest drivers ((they show up as 5.2.1.6 built on 10/6/2003 in the hardware stuff, can't find the nVidia ver. number))
DirectX 9.0
Creative SB Audigy with version 5.12.1.383 of their drivers
Windows 2000 SP4
and of course, WA5 Final

iron2000...

I tested that function and it works fine with my winamp. Also, you might want to try the following function. It does the same as yours, just shorter.

$if2(%comment%,'[???]')$if(%album%,[' ['$num(%tracknumber%,2)']'],)': '$if2(%artist%,'[???]')' - '$if2(%title%,$filepart(%filename%))

If am I understanding your function correctly, you want the track # to be displayed if the song has an album name; otherwise, display nothing for that part.

Playlist

Winamp 5.0 Final Build 12/14/2003
Mobo VIA KT266A, Athlon 2200+, 512MB
Windows XP SP1
Nvidia FX5600

In the playlist up and down arrow keys work correctly but [SHIFT]+[UP] or [SHIFT]+[DOWN] don't work...

Another little bug, in the playlist when you click
File -> New playlist, the player goes on playing the last mp3 when imho it should stop playing music until I add some new tracks...

playlist again

Configuration as above...

In the playlist when you press Delete on the keyboard, the selected item is removed but:

- the player go on playing even if the removed item is the currently played track
- after that no other item is selected, this means that if I have to remove 5 items in sequence I have to select all the single items. imho after removing an item if the focus goes on the next item, should be easier...

Dunno whether this is a lack of feature or a bug (i reckon more of an annoyance really)

Pressing the delete key in the playlist resets the currently selected file to the top of the playlist, so if you try to manipulate the playlist using just the delete key and the up/down arrows life can be slow going... (so ideally the selection would move to the song which takes the place of the track we just deleted)

WMA Tag Info in the Media Library

I know that in the past WMA tag info has been unused in version 2 and 3 altogether. I noticed in 5 that the playlist correctly uses tags but the media library still does not. My filename is Unknown Artist - Unknown Album.wma but the tag info is filled in correctly. In media library it shows up and unknown artist, but in the playlist it displays the correct tag info. Is there any way to support that across the board? I find it hard to believe that Microsoft would allow you to read tags in the player, but not in the playlist. Any Ideas?

After switching to another user, then switching back, playlist window does not update. Example image attached, before on left and after on right. Restarting WinAmp, reopening playlist, and clearing playlist do not fix problem. Fully logging off is the only solution I have found.

badframes.stt

Winamp 5.0 final
Pentium 3 1000
512 MB SDRAM
Windows XP Pro SP1
Gainward GeForce 4 Ti4800SE
DirectX 9.0b

Sometimes (not always) winamp puts a file called badframes.stt in my mp3 directories. I don't know what causes it. I'd like any info on it please. (It has only happened twice so far and I installed 5.0 today.) I inspected the file and it has two colums of numbers. I don't have any other info on it.

Should I worry?

[Edit --> DJ Egg]

Unlikely to be Winamp related
Possibly 3rd-party plugin related?
Or some external (utility/checker/player) app related.
Cannot find ref to badframes.stt anywhere on web
Post in Tech Support area if you require further assistance

[/Edit]

[Edit2] Something to do with NSV Tools / latest VP6 Encoder [/Edit2]

bug in modern skin

Options->Preferences->Skins->Modern Skins->Font Rendering

In "Internal TTF Renderer"
When disable "Use FreeType internal TTF rendering"
The song title displayed correctly, but all the tooltips blanked. (See screenshot2)

When enable "Use FreeType internal TTF rendering"
If the song title contains 8-bit characters (for example Chinese characters), they will display incorrectly (replaced by cells).
But all the tooltips work well.
(See screenshot3)

[Edit --> DJ Egg]

Known. Confirmed. Reproduced.
afaik, that option is currently required for tooltips to work.

Modern Skin Notifications Bug (SendMessage)

Bug: Modern Skin Notifications Bug (SendMessage)

Description: All WM_COMMAND messages are completely ignored while the Notification popup is visible. Others do not work at all while the modern skin is enabled.

Replication:
1. Enable the modern winamp skin and enable notifications
2. Do something to make the notification appear ( e.g. clicking the play, stop, or pause will all make the notification appear)
3. While the notification window is visible, use a third-party program to SendMessage any commands to Winamp (e.g. 400046 (toggle play/pause), 400001 (close) ...)
4. Notice that all SendMessage commands sent are completely ignored while the notification is visible

Avoidance:
1. Disable notifications; or
2. Use the classic skin

Specs:
Winamp 5.0
Asus P4G8X, PIV 2400MHz, 1024MB RAM
Windows XP SP-1
Asus V9280-TD GeForce4 Ti4200 VGA(Driver version 53.0.3)
RealTek ALC650 Audio (Driver version 5.10.0.5370)
OS, Including Service Packs
DirectX 9.0b

Not sure how the system specs will help in this case, but "oh well". The reason I note this bug is that I am writing a multimedia keyboard plugin, and the "ignoring of SendMessage" while notification is visible" would really annoy the end user.

In the mean time, I have disabled Winamp's notifications and am generating my own notifications instead. They don't look as pretty, but they'll do.

Reference post

This is my complete (multimedia) configuration:

AMD Athlon xp 1800+@1533Mhz
ASUS a7v333
Geforce4 MX440
512mb DDR PC2100
Soundblaster live! 5.1

For "unstable" I mean that the downside of the main window appears and disappears and the spectrum analyzer shows some buttons which are in the rest of the skin. This problem happens during the animation of the vis/video drawer, when closing from the top on the modern skin..... I know it's difficult to explain but I don't have the possibility to post a video capture of this event.

Playlist thingy...

Hi...my problem is, that when Winamp is closed when it's minimized and started next time, then Winamp stays minimized, BUT the playlist editor is visible. In Winamp 2 I had no such problems, so when Winamp was previously minimzed, then everything was minimized the next time started...this is quite annoying for me, cause I start Winamp from Autostart, and...well...yes...could you do something about it, guyz?

Oh...system specs...but I don't thinkz thiz really countz

Opening Two Different Files Opens the Same File

This is not an internationalization question... i don't care about the fonts.

I have a folder of songs with chinese filenames... let's say for simplicity file A, B, C and D.

With Windows Media Player or iTunes (i only used them to test... honest!) they load up as A, B, C and D. But with Winamp, the playlist will be A, A, D, D for example.

In otherwords, the file reference is mixed up some how and everytime I want to listen to song B, winamp will load song A.

This makes Winamp unusable for these songs because it will not play them at all!

This has happened in Winamp 2.91, 5.0 Final and 5.01

Windows XP Home English SP1
no language software installed
Winamp 5.01 Final

Bug:
It generates a PLS playlist even if not checked.

Bug priority: VERY LOW.

I posted bug not in good form in the forum instead of as a reply to this one.
Please apologize for trouble and if it was that the bug is not important, I didn't know sorry.

I have this kind of advanced title formating: Artist - Title [Album Tracknumber].
Sometimes the tracknumber appears as 3/12 and others just as 3, deppending on how I put the item in the playlist. If I add it from the library, it always appears as 3, if I open the mp3 directly or through an existing playlist, it varies, sometimes 3/12, others 3. It prefer 3/12, but I would settle if only it always appeared the same way. I have "use library data for title formatting" disabled. If I enable it, it appears as 03.

specs:
clean install Winamp 5.01 with any 3rd party plugin or skin
athlon XP 1800 with 512MB DDR
WinXP Pro with SP1
geforce 4 mx 440 128Mb drivers 52.70
sound blaster audigy player with EAX4 drivers

If you change XP visual styles (from the appearance tab) Winamp5 will nearly always crash. Even when it has been exempted from visual styles under the file properties > compatability tab.

Intel Graphics Chipset 830E

P3 933MHz
ASUS motherboard
512mb SDRAM
WinXP SP1
Winamp 5.01 12/19/2003
Proxomitron 4.4

I use Proxomitron and I configured Winamp with the proxy address localhost:8080 which is the proper setting for my browsers as well. i put a checkmark for "use proxy only for port 80 URLs" so that proxomitron shouldn't interfere with stream access (which never takes place on port 80, right?) then why do internet tv streams not work? radio seems to work just fine, but tv's broken unless i remove the proxy address entirely.

ok, here we go with 2 bugs.

my specs:
Windows XP sp1
512MB DDR
Geforce 2 pro
Athlon xp 1800+
Logitech Cordless Keyboard (iTouch 2.20.243)
Winamp 5.01

1st one:
- When double-clicking on an mp3 from Soulseek v151 (i.e. from the transfer window), it's being played by winamp, the winamp window is open, but winamp doesn't appear in the taskbar. This can be annoying when you have a load windows open - you have to shut them all down to "find" the winamp one.
I'm not sure whether it's a soulseek or winamp bug though.

2nd one:
- When the mouse cursor is on the main Winamp window, the media buttons (play, stop, forward, ...) that are on my keyboard don't work anymore. I have to move my mouse elsewhere to have them working again. I noticed it only happens with the main winamp window, not with winamp's media library or playlist windows.

MERRY XMAS everybody!

[Edit --> DJ Egg]

1. If Winamp doesn't appear in the Taskbar
when *that* setting is checkmarked in:
Winamp Prefs -> General Preferences
(show winamp in: taskbar/systray/both/none)
then I cannot reproduce the problem.

2. See known bugs

Locale of MSVCRT.DLL is not initialized

'setlocale(LC_ALL, "");' is required for correct MBCS operation.
