My new Winamp V2.78 skips...no joke

Dudes, I "upgraded" to Winamp Version 2.78 recently (when I also upgraded to Win2k) only to find out that it REGULARLY skips chunks of songs, to my extreme annoyance. I'll be listening to a song and it will seamlessly jump 5 seconds or so without any input or any pausing. I know it isn't a problem with my MP3s because it does it with every song and my older versions of Winamp never did this with any song. Furthermore, I can play MP3s with the software I got with my new burner and it will not skip.

I think the easiest way for me to fix this would be to download version 2.77 or something... Can I have a link for that or maybe other suggestions, please? Thanks!

All changes in 2.78 were minor form 2.77, nothing new should cause skipping. Try these:

just out of curiosity, do u have a soundblaster card? if so, check the sticky at the top of the boards to make sure that you have taken care of that problem.

When you take a hand and chop the fingers off... what do u get?

That would be the knub.

Yeah, I have a soundblaster Live and I made sure that dll was not in the folder (it wasn't). Thanks for the feedback, guys; now I'm off to do some reading of those links...

Same problem here, recent versions of WinAmp are skipping mid-song with MP3s. Have upgraded to latest version (2.78) and no creative plugins.

Skipping occurs with both my PCs, all have latest drivers and patches for everything!:

Abit KT7-RAID
Duron 650@915
Windows 2000 Pro
Creative Audigy Player

Abit BP6
2x Celeron 366@550
Windows 2000 Pro
Diamond Sonic Impact S90 (vortex 1)

Both machines are very different and have not skipped in MP3s until recently.

Any ideas?

Any ideas? What, more than the ones provided in those links above?

Anyway, a new addition to that section from: TSGH -> Useful Links

WA2.78 users: try this patch
Winamp 2.78 Update
(Updates both out_wave.dll & out_ds.dll plugins to peter's (PP) versions)

Make sure Winamp is closed first.
You might want to backup a few files first, just in case?

No luck I'm afraid. Still skips about second at a time during songs (randomly).

Anyone know what the last non-skipping version of WinAmp was so I can downgrade?

I had such a problem about one year ago with an older version of winamp after i installed my logitech-joystick.
after i uninstalled the joystick the skipping was gone and i never installed the software for the joystick again.

untill now i don't understand how this can be linked up .. but i saw it happen ... very weird ..

Greeting from Germany - home of the mp3

It's all good...

So, I'm a happy Winamp listener again. I decided to play with the output plugin settings to see if that would help. I have the DirectSound plugin selected, and in its configuration dialog I changed the output device to my SB Live! and I also changed the block size and buffer length to their maximums. I also moved the polling delay up to 25ms and made sure both buffer boxes were checked. I don't know exactly which change was needed, but now it works beautifully again. I'm back to skip-free, non-stop music. Aahhhhhhh...that's nice... I suggest you try that and see if it helps.

Aah, so you got as far as the second link I provided above, and that was enough.
Well, actually NuLoser posted the links, but I edited his post to include the new up-to-date version from TSGH -> Useful Links

http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?threadid=32363 (DirectSound tweaks)

Glad to hear it fixed it for you
