Setting up SHOUTcast DNAS 1.9.8 on Linux

I am so excited. I want to setup a shoutcast stream from my Linux VPS. I want to then source my stream from my Windows computer to the linux machine. Is this possible? Thanks

Yes it's possible of a sorts. Depends on what kind of VPS access you have.

you need to firstly decide on what you're going to use as a source e.g. Winamp + Source DSP, sc_trans, or a 3rd party product.

if you use the Source DSP then http://dev.winamp.com/wiki/Source_DS...e_.28Legacy.29 should about match (*) with a legacy (v1) DNAS as you're using (though as you're using linux, i'd probably go the route of installing the v2 DNAS and run everything as a v2 stack but that's for you to decide).

(*) most of the docs on the wiki are aimed at the v2 tools so information on v1 tools are basically against what is provided in the v1 archive or on the web.

I will use winamp from my windows 7 computer. I was thinking that I can stream the music from windows to the linux server and have the linux server handle the listeners.

you just need to ensure you install the Source DSP and configure it correctly so it'll connect to the IP address of the linux machine (basically as per the link i posted earlier) and ensure you have the plug-in in the correct mode i.e. checking legacy mode if you're going to stick with the legacy DNAS.

I've installed sc_serv_1.9.8_Linux on my machine. proc dual core, 4 Gb of RAM, 80 GB of hdd.
After sc_serv_1.9.8_Linux running, proccess required sc_serv_1.9.8_Linux was 99% of proccessor. Is this normal. I'm using OS ClearOS. or something wrong?

the dnas shouldn't be running at 99% cpu usage so you have an issue of some sort going on. you'd probably be better off trying to use the v2 DNAS which better handles things on dual core processors (though you cannot get an authhash for it at the moment so would need to make it run in v1 compatibility mode by setting yp2=0 in the config file).

DNAS does that on some VPS hosts - one solution (if I recall) is to "bind" the DNAS process to a single core (can't recall the correct terminology or command in linux, sorry, been away from linux too long)

"If you don't like DNAS, write your own damn system"

So I did

In Windows I believe it's called "process affinity".
