You must close winamp before you can continue

Trying to update winamp i received this message.
So I opened the taskmanager, closed winamp and tried again, same error.
So I rebooted.
Same error.
So I uninstalled Winamp.
Same error.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

PS I did a forum search and checked the FAQ section but didn't find this issue covered therein.

Did you perform a clean install (see the FAQ section)? What happens when you click "Ignore"? If Winamp isn't running, there is no harm in doing so.

What DLLs?
Try unchecking the ripping/burning support when installing.

Hey I didn't think of doing that. That's a great idea! Thanks. Then I will attempt another reboot to delete the old dlls. Appreciate the replies.

Ah, "my" old problem again.

Well, I have solved it!!

At least on my box: it was MIRC.
If Mirc (v6.16) was running while I tried to install Winamp, this problem occurred.
Closed Mirc, problem gone.

Possibly some routine is used both by Mirc and Winamp.
Or it is because I've installed INVISION on Mirc. Who knows.

At least no reboots or log-outs needed anymore. Man, I'm happy.

Actually that makes sense since INVISION sets up with it's mp3 player to default media player in this case, winamp, so locks down those DLL files, thanks.

In other words, winamp should be closed and all applications/software which uses it through some interface or plugin for example by showing current playing song, it could be windows messenger, yahoo messenger etc.

Also make sure you don't have a security program which might intefer, I have comodo.

and I think that if people get this error it's mostly because some application is inteferring with it. and the best way to see if it is is by installing winamp in failsafe mode. It's a long time since I booted into safe mode but if I remember correctly only basic software will be running. That's software which was on your computer when you installed windows. I don't know about Dedicated windows versions which has a modified version (Lenovo laptops for instance) will start up with more than just basic windows software.

I was pointed here by google so might as well help others with the same problem.
