Winamp 5 Component List & Installation Guide

Hi, I'm just wondering what the modern skin support does. I just want to use the media library (haven't tried it yet) and expand my old classic skin so the library window looks like the rest of winamp (if that's possible). So my question is, do I need modern skin support to display the media library?

Another thing that just came to my mind:
Is there a description of all the installation options, like what's the winamp agent for or what does 'Extended Jump To File Support' mean?

Modern Skin support allows you to...

1. Use Modern skins and not be limited to just Classic skins (many Modern skins also contain extra features that Classic skins don't/can't have)
2. Modern skins will also skin the Media Library which not ALL Classic skins will do (especially older ones)

So, with many Classic skins the Media Library will not be skinned, as it would using Modern skins. You do not "need" Modern skin support to display the media library. As long as you've installed Media Library support, the Media Library will be displayed (but perhaps not skinned) and you'll be able to use it. If using a Classic skin other than the default Classic skin, and if that skin has not been updated by the author to also skin the Media Library, then the Media Library will instead "fall back" to being displayed using the default Classic skin (bundled in Winamp distribution).

*Note: You will find that the majority of the thousands of Classic skins available for download at winamp.com are in fact older skins and have not been updated by the authors to skin the Media Library.

The Winamp Agent is used (enabled) to protect file associations and to prevent other applications from stealing or hijacking file associations from Winamp. Windows Media Player is notorious for doing this, especially when you open media files from Windows Explorer, and then suddenly you find that your media is playing with WMP and not with Winamp any longer. The Winamp Agent also places an icon in the systray for right-click menu options to open Winamp and access/open Winamp via Bookmarks, when Winamp is closed. When Winamp is open, the Winamp Agent icon right-click menu contains practically all options/ features available in Winamp.

"Extended Jump To File Support" refers to DrO's Jump To File Extra (JTFE) plugin, which is included in the Winamp distribution and is checkmarked by default in the Winamp installer. It's an invaluable feature and I suggest that you do not UNcheck it in the installation process.

Another plugin created by DrO, Skinned Preferences, will allow skinning of all Preferences windows and other related dialog windows as well. Another very good plugin developed by DrO.

Another plugin developed by DrO that is invaluable if you have downloaded many Classic and Modern skins, but have too many to easily distinguish which is which, is DrO's Skins In Submenu plugin. The plugin splits the Modern and Classic skins into their own submenus.

Thanks for your detailed answer and the explanations. However, the things I mentioned, the Winamp Agent and the "Extended Jump To File Support" were just examples. I was looking for a complete list of explanations of all the features you can choose (not) to install with Winamp. I mean, when you don't know what for instance the Jump-To-File thing does, how are you supposed to know if you want/need it? Well I thought that you wanted to know what they were for, based on your question. If I had thought otherwise I would not have wasted any of my time explaining what they are for. You asked about them specifically, and I answered.

I was looking for a complete list of explanations of all the features you can choose (not) to install with Winamp.

You will not find such a list. None exist. You can suggest this in the Wishlist forum but I doubt if anybody at AOL/Nullsoft will bother to compile such a thing. And since the Moderators here are not paid in any way, I doubt if any of us would tackle it either. I certainly won't. But what I will do is try my best to answer questions (such as yours) in these forums if possible.

I mean, when you don't know what for instance the Jump-To-File thing does, how are you supposed to know if you want/need it?

How are you supposed to know if something is wanted/needed? Do what I and just about everyone else does... install the Full package with all features checked. Then as you try each feature, you can decide if you don't want it or not. In most cases, such as with JTFE or any other plugin, if you don't like it, the plugin(s) can be easily uninstalled via Preferences > Plug-in > Plug-in category/type > highlight/select the plug-in > click "Uninstall plug-in" button

An alternative method would be to first close Winamp, then browse to the Winamp\Plugins folder on your hard drive, and physically remove the DLL file for the plug-in.

In the rare case that a feature/component cannot be removed in the above manner then just uninstall/reinstall Winamp 5 Full but at that point you can UNcheck the feature that you have already "test-driven" and do not want.

Signal Processor Studio plugin

Used for volume levelling, to try make all music files play at approximately the same volume. More info here.

5. Database Import/Export Tool
Filename: ml_impex.dll (Plugins dir)
For exporting the local media library database to an iTunes compatible .xml file (useful for backing up the database so it can be reimported later). Can also be used to import existing iTunes library database & playlists .xml files directly into Winamp's Media Library.

6. Podcast Directory (pka: Shoutcast Wire)
Filename: ml_wire.dll
Allows you to subscribe to, download and manage podcasts.

7. Online Media (aka: Media Library > Online Services)
Filename: ml_online.dll
Replacement in 5.2+ for old Online Media section.

Dialog 1:
Installer Language
Select a language (default is English).
Click OK

Screen 1:
Welcome Screen
Welcome to the Winamp Installer.
Click "Next"

Screen 2:
License
Accept the licence agreement.
Click "Next"

Screen 3:
Choose Install Location
Destination Folder.

The default folder is: "C:\Program Files\Winamp"
To change it, either type in the path yourself, or manually create an appropriate folder via Windows Explorer first, and then use the "Browse" button to locate said folder.

Note that on clean installs, all settings are saved to the user's Application Data folder @ %AppData%\Winamp regardless of what destination folder is selected for the program installation.

Click "Next"

Screen 4:
Choose Components
Installation Type: Full | Standard | Lite | Previous | Custom
Select components/plugins/features to install (see above for details).
Click "Next"

Screen 5:
Choose Start Options
-Create Start menu entry (places Winamp shortcuts in Start > Programs)
-Create Quick Launch Icon (places Winamp shortcut in Quick Launch toolbar)
-Create Desktop icon (places Winamp shortcut on Desktop)

Uncheck what you don't want and click "Next"

"Launch Winamp after the installer closes"

Winamp Setup 1: Choose Skin

Select one of the two Bento skin options (standard or large).
Choose 'Current' to select whatever skin was active prior to installation (useful on upgrades).
Or select the Winamp Modern skin, or built-in Winamp Classic 2.x base skin, or any other 3rd-party skin (if installed).

Click "Next"


Screen 9:
Winamp Setup 2: File Associations

1-5 = WinXP and Win7 only (not Win8/10)
1. Audio Files: Select which Audio filetypes you want Winamp to be the default player for.
2. Other Files: Lists any file extensions added by 3rd-party Input plugins.
3. Playlist Files: Select Playlist types you want Winamp to be the default player for.
4. Video Files: Select which Video filetypes you want Winamp to be the default player for.
5. Winamp Specific Files: Makes sure Winamp is the default handler of Skins (WSZ, WAL) and Lang files (WLZ).
6. Launch Winamp for Audio CDs: Makes Winamp the default CD Player
7. Show Winamp in Folder context menus in Windows Explorer: Adds 'Play/Enqueue in Winamp' etc to the menu when you right-click Folders in Windows Explorer.
8. Enable Winamp Agent: Places Winamp Agent icon in systray.

Click "Finish"


A small "Starting Winamp" dialog appears.

You would know better than me exactly what all of these things are since I don't use the complete suite of Winamp features. I assumed a comprehensive update would not be a quick or easy job.

However, I was thinking that this info would help new users and may help those still using older versions to see how to upgrade and mostly keep the 'look and feel' of the versions they are using.

I removed a heap of stuff from the original... 3rd-party Bundles, OpenCandy, Browser plugins, AOL Search, Gracenote features, and more.

Yup, I missed some stuff in the decoders & ML sections, which I've now also fixed.
